Title: Smart TV / Phone
Post by: Mr Skrunts on 22 February 2016, 16:53:40
Managed to get the display of my Samsung Galaxy to display on my TV when I 1st bought the TV but never managed to sort it since.

Am turning on Bluetooth on both devices, the phone finds and can see the TV and allows the pair.

TV just searches and searches, last night I tried my S4 and a friends S6, am I doing it right or is old age well and trully kicking in. :-\

Isn't this done with the 'screen mirroring' function?  :-\

Please explain to an old fart the reason for wanting to do this? I have the same items, but cannot imagine why I would need it, no doubt I do, but just haven't discovered why. :-\

I'm struggling to understand why, as well, unless its for viewing photos, videos etc  :-\

Even an old fart like me can get my photos on the telly, but I have a compatible Samsung telly.

Don't have a Galaxy but guessing you need to do over the WiFi Network either direct or through your Home Network Router rather than Bluetooth.

It's better on your phone. You can knock one out when you're out and about.  ;D

Screen casting from Samsungs done via MiraCast, nothing to do with Bluetooth or pairing.  ;)

Have a read of this...

I have a cable which allows me to connect to any TV with a  Hamilton input.  It is handy when always travelling and living in hotels.   Cost about a tenner off ebay I think.

On the subject of Bluetooth and TV sets.  The ones in Heathrow T2 are completely open, no security nowt.  Had some fun last time I flew from there ;D

Either way, I would still like to know why the phone will pair to the TV but the TV wont recognise the phone.

Every now and again when I have company and we might need to look someting up on the net, it was fine as I allways used my TV as my PC screen.  Then I got a 4K screen and now run the PC on that (and occasionally run the TV as a 2nd screen, but have to reset the graphics output accordigly which is a bit of a fuss)  By using the phone I was hoping just to flick both into blutooth mode so everyone in the room could see the display from the phone onto the TV.

As said in opening post, it did manage this once, but when it work did I didn't have wi-fi so it wasn't done that way.

Screen mirroring cant find a compatable device, but I thought was was over blutooth anyway. plus there was an S6 available that neither my S4 or the TV would mirror with.

Maybe it is a bandwidth issue.  If you connect via Bluetooth and the bandwidth is there but too small for screen sharing it may prevent the phone being displayed as an option.  Try wifi direct instead as the potential bandwidth is much higher.

Good point, but wouldn't have thought it was a bandwidth issie just to pair the 2 together.

I have a similar problem with my Samsung smart tv, it used to connect every time but now I have some right trouble trying to get them to pair using the `cast` function on my phone (Nexus 5)
Once it has been done the tv is supposed to remember the phone but doesn`t at all, I think it might have been an update that caused it because it used pair faultlessly every time.

I tend to use my bluray player now for casting the screen as this works every time.

I used to love sorting problems like this, I now find myself getting stressed and pi**ed off so easly.  I admit that technolgy is changeing for the better, the sad thing that all the new technolgy doesnt allways come the idiot proof instructions.

All a sign that I am getter older but not wiser.  ::)

I find it frustrating when something used to work flawlessly and then doesn`t  :-\

It`s like my tv has developed Alzheimer's and has no memory of my phone whatsoever and I just sruggle to get them to talk to each other,. where as on the other hand I have no problem connecting to my Sony bluray player.

Just get a dumb TV and save yourself the aggro.

All smart TVs will be on the scrap heap in a couple of years anyway. Casualties of the combination of insecure, half-baked firmware, no proper patching and permanent internet connectivity. ::)

Well well, you live and learn. I just went in to the TV menu's to come up with some logical reason to connect my mobile to my TV and found that I can set my recorder remotely whilst away from the house. Didn't know it did that, although I suppose everybody else probably knew that years ago.   ::) ;D
I might have another fiddle to see what else it does.  ;D

I have PIR recording cctv and some time back I walked in to the sitting room to see an image of the cctv in a small area at the top right hand corner of the screen, while the TV program was still on the main screen. When the PIR kicked in it did it again so I asked my wife how she had managed to get the 'screen in screen' to work. Her reply was " I don't know, I sat on the remote and it just appeared.  ;D

If my wife sat on the remote we'd never get it back. :(
