Title: After 11 years and 108,000 miles in my ownership....
Post by: tunnie on 09 March 2016, 20:35:21
My 2.2 has finally let me down, first time ever!

Keeps over heating, into the red and coolant light on  :'(

Coolant level was fine when it first overheated, all still there. Perhaps stuck stat? As going along at 20/30 temp stayed stable ish. Got up to a clear section, went to 40mph and shot up to 95. So pulled in.

Going to upgrade to AA Relay, as if this had been MrsT with little miss T things could be a lot worse. Currently awaiting said AA bod, while I'm eating a bloody terrible sandwich from a Mace shop at a BP station.

Huge thanks to TheBoy for the unexpected call and diagnosis efforts, very, very much apprieated.

Just hope I've not cooked the HG  :'( :'(

The sudden onset makes me suspect that the pump impeller has come loose on the pump shaft :-\

I was thinking water pump too  :-\

Little fatty thought water pump too, but I drove for around 15 mins at very low speed ( after it previously over-heated) and it's been ok. If it was circulating no coolant at-all, I'd expect it over heat super quickly? Not go 20 mins?

Low speed doesn't put much heat into the system so it might take a while to overheat if the pump isn't working well. But considering it's part of the cambelt system a faulty pump is likely to cause worse problems

3.2 Elite estate here if you don't want to fix it...

Feking AA. Said they would be here in under an hour, now it's 2 hours  ::) >:(

When I get it back, will run a compression test, then pop out stat. Check that see what's what. Then pop water pump off.

Not sure I could run 2x 3.2 Elites Al  :(

You could then lpg the saloon, leaving the estate as the baby bus ;)

Lpg tank and plumbing could be simply swapped over, new front end kit and jobs a goodun...

Post by: tunnie on 09 March 2016, 21:49:23
2.2's LPG tank not suitable, not 4 hole...

But that is an option, LPG the 3.2 then look for a bus for MotherT. Probably a Zafira of some description. Costly, ~£1k to LPG. Plus could only do LPG via forum favours here. Plus a bus purchase.

Another option is put a 406 HDI into a commute role, as I know of a spotless one sitting idle.

As I can't fix a HG myself, getting it to towed anywhere like Brackley for a fix is not practical or cost effective.

Be sad to see the 2.2 go!

Mr AA man stuck some pressure thing on coolant bottle. He says water pump too. No change in pressure when engine under load?

Ducking AA. Won't tow me. Have to call another truck as he is clocking off. Bloody told them I needed a tow.

Time? Another 3 bloody hours

Going to chance it home slowly. No traffic about

Bloody useless AA service. Limping the old girl home. Done Feltham to Egham, but the climb near Royal Holloway was too much. So stopped again to let it cool down.

Been doing sub 30mph in 3rd or 4th gear, keeping revs down. Heaters on full too. It's going to be a looong night!

Much pressure in the top hose?

If it's rock hard I'm betting on the head gasket, if it's still squidgy I reckon pump. Or maybe a blockage of some kind.

May Day woudln't tow my Smart due to it being an auto ...... me saying it was an automated manual made no difference. I broke down about 1900hrs & got home around midnight  IIRC, a journey of less than 25 miles.  >:(

It's annoying - I've broken down several times in Migs.  I'm with the AA and I just sign a form to say I'm happy for the car to be towed, and they plod along at 30mph or so and home I go.

I suppose it depends on how far from home you are.  Fortunately, I've never been more than 10 miles or so.  :-\

Trusty steed still doing its best. It's not strickly let me down, it's just in a very severe limp mode  ;D

It was 23 mile tow, I would not mind the speed. But I was not waiting another 3 hours. I'm almost home. At Bagshot BP now letting it cool for hopefully final bit home

Had similar when I snapped a wishbone... Told the call handler that I needed flatbed recovery and still insisted on sending a van out... His first words? 'Fack all I can do with that, gonna need a flatbed...' Apparently they assume the customer is wrong and are prepared to chance it being fixed at the roadside regardless of the actual issue... ::)

Same thing happened to me when a NEW Bilstein strut failed at a weld point and put the NSF wheel into the arch.  I explain on the phone it will require a flatbed. "Yes, no problem" and a van turns up to tell me he can't tow it.  Erm, yeah, I'm aware of that.

Good work my friend!  Glad you are home in the warm.  It's not a nice night out there.

Now will need to diagnose it all soon, starting with a compression test before looking at the water pump.

A mate of mine had a similar argument with the AA over a kit car breakdown once.

"Hello! I'm half way down Henley high street and need a recovery truck."
AA:"OK. I'll send a van"
"No. Trust me, I need a recovery truck. The car's going nowhere"
AA:"Did you know, we can fix 99.975757% of breakdowns at the roadside..."
"Not this one, love. Can you call that recovery truck, please?"
AA:"Did you know, we can fix 99.975757% of breakdowns at the roadside..."
"I can see 5 litres of oil on the road under my car. I can see bits of sump, bits of bearing, bits of connecting rod, bits of piston. There's lots of smoke."
AA:"Don't worry, Sir. we can fix 99.975757% of breakdowns at the roadside..."
"Do you know much about cars?"
AA:"Not really  :-[ "
"Does your manager"
AA:"Oh, yes, he's quite keen"
"Can you just go and tell him what I've told you?"
<short pause>
AA:"Recovery truck will be with you in 45 minutes"

 ;D

I wish I'd known. I was leaving Farnborough about when you broke down and have a rope in the boot. ;)

A friend had a similar conversation with the recovery company about his RX8 (dead coil pack, flooded engine) "I'm sure we'll get you going sir".. Not the AA so they're all the same:

Man turns up in van, "I've fixed loads of these.."
Mark says, "Did I mention the back end of the car was basically on fire and it's only running on one rotor?"
Man in van, "Oh. I'll call the flatbed."

(Funny story - he limped from mine to South Mimms before stopping for petrol.. it was at this point that the interior of the car was engulfed in smoke because the backbox of the exhaust was glowing orange and had melted the oil container in the boot  :o Must have looked like the red arrows were going down the road as the oil was dripping out of the drain bung in the boot floor! ;D)

Anyway - Tunnie, next time if you break down around that kind of area give me a call (unless it's 1am, then you're on your own  :P). I doubt the Ranger would have complained much about having an Omega on a rope behind it :)

The AA and RAC have always preferred to send a patrol first. Patrols are expected to fix stuff because they don't have the 30minute time constraints that contractors operate under. Patrols are paid whether they are working or not, contractors are paid per job. The AA don't actually have that many trucks, and keep those for jobs that can be completed within the tacho rules. Everything else goes to contractors, who are still paid about the same amount as they were 15years ago. This is basic business! Much of this reduction in service is due to the change from an association into a company and the asset stripping that resulted.

And look at the practical side: they don't know how competent you are. Probably half of the jobs I did were badly described, with the fault being something totally different. You would be amazed how many the steering doesn't work turn out to be broken drive belts, or wheel changes are the result of a broken spring. Hell, it made a pleasant change to find that the spare wheel was usable.

If all you want is a tow home each time, use a different service. Green Flag's recent change in the way they do business means you're likely to have a long wait, the AA and RAC are as discussed, Call Assist and First Call are beyond useless. Personally, I would use National Breakdown if I was going to change: their approach has always seemed to me to be the most competent and professional out of all the people we dealt with. I never saw a long recovery refused for instance.

I think I'll need to invest in a Tow Pole, I think it's a better investment than AA membership  ::)

Double checked my invoices, the water pump is 2 years old. Bought from Buy Parts By and its QH brand, did double check the warranty, only 1 year!  :(

I was on the verge of going out to settle this score, but sadly a long day, some trouble getting Mrs TB home following a TBE hissy fit, and shear hunger meant its a score to be settled another time...

I wonder if the pump O-Ring is still flexible enough to be re-used?

If it is then you can pop the pump out for inspection without worrying about buying new parts first.

I had a similar experience on a 3.0 10 years ago. Car was a recent purchase. Put on the aircon for the first time, then car began to overheat. I made it home in 6 mile steps, from Chippenham, got home at 3am. Changed radiator, no cure. Took it out again, saw aircon rad was clogged, could not see through it. Blew it clear with compressed air from the back, cured fault. Car ran 6 more years trouble free, then daughter crashed it.

Well..... my trusty steed rides again!  :D :D :D :D :D

Put spark plugs and coil pack back in today, after compression testing it last night. I found old GM stats in garage, one from 2006 and one from last month. Popped them in boiling water and looked for the stat opening, found it hard to tell. But old GM one had some movement, newer GM one moved a lot. As this always opened when fitted to car at around 75c, so next I took one off the car and tested it. Nothing, no movement.

Put on GM one on fitted in 2006 but went lazy, car not heats up normally and runs fine. Took her on a blast up the dual carriage way, all is good.

Will see how this stat behaves I guess  :-\

I think TBs rusty bullet is far ahead in miles, 1998 plate and 250k?

My 2.2 is 2000 plate and only 188k in comparison, but 188k is fair amount for a 4 pot.

But we both have other Omegas (both have late 3.2's) - We also both know deep down the other cars are younger and in better condition, but we keep the old battered examples going.

But they are very cheap to run, practical motoring and my 2.2 has been a trusty work horse.

I'm keen to get the old girl to 200k  :)

The Bullet is about 228k, probably need to add a couple of k to that for when the ABS unit failed at a time I was al over the country building poxy servers for blocking access to a teenager's (wet) dream selection of websites. A 1998MY, built and registered in 1997.

Not a whippersnapper like tunnie's trusty heap. But as cheap to run/tax/insure/service (by some margin, its the cheapest to insure in my fleet), comfortable, reliable-if-you-have-a-spare-crank-sensor, reasonable quick, reasonably capable round corners, and a whole heap of fun.

Well so far it's been ok, stat has been little lazy around 80/85, but mostly stays nearer to 85.

Question is, what stat do I buy next?

GM Source, in a GM box from a dealer = Opened way too soon. Stat was opening at around 75c sending temp crashing down to almost end stop. Could not get temp to rise above 80 no matter what. Also confirmed this by popping it in tub of boiling water, it could move quickly despite kettle water only ~90 :-\

Cheapo sourced, from EuroCarParts = Normal workings, popped this stat in, the car straight away behaved normally, would climb to 85c, drop as stat opened, then return to 85c and stay there. That is until about 6 weeks later when it jammed shut and nearly killed the engine.  :(

Are they not available for different temperatures?

Could try an AC Delco one from the states... might come from a different supplier :-\

Quoted part number RobG gave, guy did say it was super seeded. Replacement was perfect match, even down to 92c etched into the stat.

Get it replaced. If you bought as a trade club item, you can get them to replace it for free, whilst you drink their coffee ;)
