Title: Noisy old Merc.
Post by: Migv6 le Frog Fan on 12 March 2016, 10:44:22
At the MOT station last week with my old 2.5D, I started the engine after the test was finished and the throttle stuck open. It revved its nuts off for a few seconds before I switched it off. Discovered the linkage had got caught on something so sorted it there and then.
Problem is, ever since then, at idle it sounds like an old black cab that hasn't been serviced for a long time. At higher revs at doesn't sound so bad, but still a bit knocky.
Noise is definitely from the top end,so Im thinking valvegear related ?
It still performs the same as it did previously, so presumably not bent valves or similar. Knackered lifter maybe ? :-\

Sorry, posted in wrong section. Thought I was in gen car chat. Hopefully a kind admin will move.  :-[

Will the shitty oil and revving the balls off it, you might have displaced some crap in the sump which is now restricting oil flow.

Drop the sump and clean it and the strainer out.
Give it a few short (500 ish mile) oil changes with cheap crap and see how it is  :y

Don't they Rev the 'dangle berries' off it (4000rpm) to do a smoke test for the MOT?

Something like that yeh. It was ok after that. Problem only appeared after the stuck throttle episode. Ive just had the cam cover off and all looks fine. Used a length of wood to listen and it sounds like it could be from an injector on pot 4 or 5.
Its not that bad tbh.Im just concerned that as it happened after the throttle sticking open, this has caused some kind of problem.  :-\
