Title: Engine overheating
Post by: Kate on 13 March 2016, 18:57:03
My 2.5 diesel is overheating and eml is flashing occasionally. When this happens there is a loss of power.

When I first collected the car the temp gauge showed that normal engine temp wasn't being reached. Could this be a sticky thermostat?

Thanks for any advice :y

If your engine did not reach temp due to the 'stat it would be because was stuck open however an engine overheating due to the stat would be because it was stuck shut.

wasn't there some water pumps for these engines with plastic impellors that disintegrated?  :-\

Be careful about cooking those 2.5TD's, as the heads crack easily.

Don't let it above 100C on the gauge. Ever.

Is the temp controllable is you drive sedately, or just overheats no matter what?

Thanks TB. It overheats really fast, no matter what.

Is there a guide for that? :)

Is there a Haynes Manual that covers the 2.5 diesel? :y

When you say its overheating Kate what is the temp gauge reading?
It used to stay quite low in the winter and get up to normal in the summer but get warmer going up any steep hills etc ,but always stayed within a safe range!

The EML has always flashed and is a common problem every now and again you need to do the "diesel magic " trick that sorts it out for a while .
There is a guide on here for it somewhere.
I did mean to change the stat and water pump at some time, but just never got round to it ::)

Temp went to 100. :o

I'll get those parts changed so hopefully that will fix it. What's that magic trick? I've never heard of that.

That's the right stuff but the trick bit is to buy two bottles chuck one in the tank and put the other neat into the fuel filter (or new filter preferably) then fire it up and hold the revs  at a few for about 30 sec or so.

Perhaps the problem is really in a faulty thermostat, it's probably jammed.
At least it is not so expensive, so you can start with it. Anyway it can't hurt to replace it ;)
