Had new laser fitted last year and nav has behave pefectly since then, although in truth very rarely gets used but disc has always been in machine.
Today I pulled of motorway slip road and whilst listeneing to radio suddenly entire head unit shut down.Nav disc ejected .
Pushed on/off button and radio and head unit fired back up and has worked faultless since but nav will refuse to accept disc as everytime inserted it ejects .Have cleaned disc although it was spotless and is a genuine 2008/9 navtec disc.
Any ideas as would of hope new laser would of lasted more than 8 months given that it hasnt been used for more than 5 hours max intotal in that time.

Will it accept and play a Music Disc?
-
Havent tried that as yet Chris.
Will report back later ,thanks :y
-
Well as advised have tried a music disc.....and it plays :y...so assume something up with nav disc ??..
-
When you cleaned it Andy, did you clean both sides?, is it slightly warped at all.
-
Gave it a good spray with CD/DVD lense cleaner fluid then polished with glasses cloth.
Disc looked to be totally flat and was spotless with no scratches on surface....although I adnit to only cleaning the written side....should I give the yellow label side a clean too ;)
-
Both sides of nav disc cleaned, and I have checked and disc is totally flat with no marks/scratches etc.
Disc gets drawn into slot by motor, few seconds later disc is rejected.Just tried another music disc and it retains it and plays just short section of music so assume lens is recognising disc...any advise guys.
Might try disconnecting battery for hour or so and seeing if that helps ..

Just to be sure I tried another audio disc in head unit this morning expecting it to play.
No such luck though
Audio disc stuck in nav slot now .Wont eject or play so something is bust
Any ideas

Hmm, not sure, but I think if it was me be tempted to pull the power lead out of the back of the HU for a few hours and start again. :-\

Sounds like a generic audio laser has probably been fitted, and not the correct type for reading the smaller data bits on the nav discs and has now failed.
Common mistake these days as the proper lasers are getting hard to find, and the inferior audio ones look almost identical and are readily available
-
Thats not great,Dave, but thanks for possible reason...strange as it worked perfectly when I occasionally used it over the past 9 or so months.
Audio disc now stuck and wont eject so looks like thats the way it will need to stay unless anybody has any solutions for repairs to be done correctly .? :(

Audio Lasers were never designed to play the Navigation data discs, as unlike audio tracks, they much smaller pits and troughs to record the data, and although you may initially get away with playing these, the laser will struggle to focus and burn itself out fairly quickly. Imagine how knackered your eyesight would be if you constantly had to squint at something that you couldn't quite see clearly.
:(
Disc now stuck as unit cannot see anything in there due to failed laser, and therefore it does not know it has anything in there to eject.

Dave.
Is the fitting of the "correct" laser a proceedure you undertake as a service ? :y

Sadly not any more -
We only ever use genuine parts, and they dried up many years ago for that model :'(
