Title: Converting to xenon
Post by: Alexi777-77 on 24 March 2016, 18:04:39
Hi I need help.
I've got Omega Elite 1997 3.0 with normal halogen lights
How difficult it will be to convert to xenon lights.
There is one pair of xenon headlights with ballast pack on eBay for reasonable price do I need to get something else?

Please help.

Your also need the self leveling motors and gubins, plus do be done properly Head lamp wash kit.

TBH, now we are in 2016 there are some good bright replacement bulb upgrades around for standard lights.

Is it a 97 or 98 model? (ie, pfl or mfl)

It's 1997.
And it has headlight washers already not sure why no xenon fitted then  :(

Along with the lights, you`ll need the ballast packs, D2S bulbs, self-levelling motors plus the connector plugs from the lights you may buy

Xenons became standard on Elites with 1998 model, released September 1997.

So you have those god awful ribbed headlights, being a PFL, rather than the clear headlights that were fitted on MFL.

Retrofitting HIDs is a grey area legally. Technically, its most likely not legal, but is not a MOT fail. Maybe.

Given this, and the price of quality bulbs (£40 a pop, cheapest quality ones - avoid anything cheaper), I'd recommend fitting MFL halogen units along with the new range of bulbs (such as Osram Nightbreakers or Phillips Visionplus), and maybe a 3M kit to polish the lenses.

Where are the self leveling motors for the lights live?
Thanks

The self levelling motors live inside the headlamp unit, as with any Omega, the sensors live on the Offisde (I think) rear wishbone and the Nearside front wishbone. This is to literally sense if the nose of the car is up or down, re: weight over the back axle vs front.  :)

Both nearside...

They feed information to the headlight ecu behind the righthand headlight up in the inner wing, which in turn tells the motors what to do. The motors themselves twist into the back of each light unit.

The sensor one the right hand rear trailing arm is actually the ecu for the self leveling suspension and has sod all to do with the headlights.

And unless it's a Sport/mv6, you'll also need the headlight washers along with a suitable washer bottle and associated plumbing and wiring...

Outside the unit. They are a "twist fit" in the back of the unit :)

Just reiterate what Jamie has said about the legality side of things, the two MOT testers at my son's place have a policy of looking at the lighting set up on the car and if it is non standard or not a pukka conversion...then you are gone ,end of story, and those guys are pretty tame compared against one or two MOT stations around here one of which turned my red MV6 away before the test as I had fitted 'slightly' blue LED sidelights......changed them for standard and then changed them back after the MOT :)

...... contrasted with 'my' tester that couldn't give a monkey's .... even when I pointed mine out to him.

Thought I'd take mine in for a pre-mot on the emissions (as my catalytics are on the way out, I reckoned) I was buying some Omega bits off him, and when he stuck the sensor up the backbox and we discovered it was still within tolerance, I inquired whether he wanted me to run it to 2k rpm, to get the other figure. His answer was
'yeah you can, if you like'
After looking over the new results he then confessed
'I don't tend to bother with testing them at 2 thou, if they're ok at idle, they're normally fine with a bit of revs on. It's only another four dead daisies.'  ;D ;D 'it takes more pollution to make one of them things that it chucks out the back pipe in its whole life. Keep another one on the road.'  :y

note: he's a very good tester, and will ensure to the nth degree the important bits, brakes, mechanicals are spot on, by the way.  :)
