hi all,
have ordered 2 new boot struts on account that every time I open the boot it tries to shut on my head..... ouch.
my question is are these easily fitted and how :y
-
Using a small screwdriver, gently pry off the metal clip around each end. Replace the strut. Slide the clips back into place from the end. Takes less time than it did to 'type' this post on a tablet.
-
Do 1 side at a time and secure boot with a wooden prop as if the old ones are weak when you remove oneside the weight will cause boot to close
They are only a push fit secured by a sprung metal clip.Carefully slide it from the end with a thin screw driver being carefull it does bend too much or spring off into space :o
The boot lid fitting is easier to get at as the bottom/body fitting is partially obscured by the gutter edge.
Should take around 5 minutes a side :y

Out of interest, how much were the new struts? Ones on the 3.2 always make a big creaking noise when it's naturally stopped and I have to push it back to silence it.
-
hi tunnie,
they were from sgs engineering solutions it came to £37.54 but that included £5.30 next day delivery which is optional :y

im not a happy man,
have just fitted the new boot struts but unlike the originals the top plastic part that goes on to the ball joint is a little bigger the vx ones and rubs on the boot lid
also on the first inch of opening the boot lid is very heavy the gas struts don't seem to kick in until then,, any one any ideas they are definitely the ones sgs sale that match vx part number
>:(

The ends are usually screwed on, so you can probably fit your old ends to the new struts. These are Lego parts, so a little mix and match can sometimes be expected. Or you can get bent over the counter at your dealer.
And the first inch of travel being heavy is due to leverage, pressure in the struts, friction and a bunch of technical stuff. It's perfectly normal.

I bought a pair of Magneti Marelli ones from the bay of the flea and very happy with them. Near identical to the original GM ones, no rubbing and all for £22.99 for the PAIR !!! :y :y Seach for '1994-2003 Vauxhall Omega Saloon Tailgate Boot Struts Gas Springs Lifters x2 PAIR' Come in their own yellow box !
My Dad has also ordered a pair and they have transformed the car. I have the superior MFL ;) and resored boot back to its original opening. From about 10 inches open, if you let go it opens all by itself fully. Also had similar impact on my dads FL Omega.

Thanks, that's a good price. Might give them a whirl, as it shuts awfully quickly at the moment too

I can't complain about them (and I am picky on what I fit to the old Girl :y).
Took about a week to arrive, as from Latvia, but no issues and kept informed all the way by the seller.

:y You should be fine with them :y I went for them as was a fairly well known make and no grumbles so far.
You probably know, but I found that fitting one side at a time was best (in case I forgot which way around they went as it does matter ;)) I didn't have to prop the boot open, but not sure if the MFL mechanism is subtlety different ?, but I don't think it is on comparison to my dads FL.
I popped one stuff off, cleaned and lubed the whole hinge mech (GT85 as have a load of it, and teflon coated) then put a small bit of Vaseline on the ball on the fixing on the boot lid.
Then found best to pop the bottom one (attached to car) on first and the the top second (the one on the boot lid). Needed a fraction of a push on the boot lid then to align the ball and socket whilst applying pressure and popped on a treat as you WILL NOT be able to compress them by hand I can guarantee !!!! :D :D
Interested to see how you get on :)
The hardest thing now is closing my boot :D Have to pull all the way down to the last 8 inches else wants to open again, but once less than 8 inches she pops closed all on her own.
The boot on my dads FL was starting to be lethal as it would slam shut (fingers, arms, limbs regardless if in the way >:() at the slightest move :-[ This concerned me as he is 76 :y but new struts now solved it :)

I will let you know how I get on :y

hi DrAndyB.
have fitted the Magneti Marelli struts and they are totally awesome thanks for the advice
to any members on here go for these do not buy from sgs engineering .com. they do not do the job they don't even take the weight of the boot lid until its open about 2 inches even then they don't hold the boot open until its 3/4 open
and there after sales is no good tried telling me that they all work like that to be honest the originals done a better job after 14 years
also they don't listen very difficult to get a refund :y
