Title: Creaking....
Post by: Terbs on 16 April 2016, 15:42:05
Hi all

My 2.6 2001 Elite Estate creaks like heck every time I go over speed humps, etc. I know the back shock absorbers are supposed to be self levelers, but they are non levelling on there. It creaks at the front too. Is it the shock absorbers or would it be the springs. There can't be a major problem as it passed the MOT with flying colours, and was doing it before.
IMO, it drives ok, using it regularly, its just over humps and bumps :(
Opinions appreciated :y

Creaking at the back is quite possibly the rear subframe donut bushes starting to give up.

Same noise from the front is most likely the suspension top bearings getting dry although as Omeags have numerous rubber joints all could be suspects :(

Andrew, where are the suspension top bearings, can they be oiled. I have had poly bushes and GM back bushes on the wishbones. I think the creaks are more front than back :y

Creaking at the front of mine was the forward wishbone bush but I've got poly's fitted so I just re-copper greased them.  :y

Edit:
Just seen that you have poly front bush so there's possibly your culprit.  :y  One bolt, lever it down, re-grease and refit. The copper grease comes with the bushes normally and that's what it's for.  :y

Yep, I've had this before with polys. Need an occasional re-grease. :y

Hi Tony.

Front shock top bearings are the last bit of the front suspension leg in the wheel arch before it goes through its mounting and secured on inner wing inside open bonnet area.

Have known then to become dry of grease and creak under load.Best advise is to replace the complete bearing assembly which requires dropping the suspension leg and dismantling ...to repack with grease is a similar proceedure so for the extra cost of a new bearing set seems hardly worth the effort.

Can you replicate the noise by rocking the front end side/side as that would help pin point the problem.

Do you have to take them apart to do that, or just smear them ? Refering to poly bushes..

Just lifted the bonnet and bounced the car...the noise is definitely at the front of the car, meaning not the shock absorbers, more between the engine and radiator but low down, if that makes sense. Worse from the drivers side, but a still a small creak from the passenger side. I don't know if it will work, but I will try to get the noise on my phone. :y

I've answered that with an edit to the previous reply but it's an easy fix at the Wycombe meet.  :y

Here, hopefully, is the sound. Without being crude, it sounds like lovemaking on a creaky bed.

Get some coppaslip on the polys, 10mins per side, most of that jacking up and supporting.

ive got the exact same creaking but in the rear on both sides. I suspect donut bushes. ive never done them. having said that I may have a broken spring or twi. though haven't had a chance to see.

I cant view your video (my computer) but if its down near the radiator area id say front bone bushes. or it could be ARB bushes?

Could be that, Webby...the ARB are poly too :y
Tried bouncing the back of the car, and not getting any noises, so I am thinking its all at the front.
Might find a hump and reverse over it, seems like a plan.
I assume Halfrauds will sell that copper grease stuff.

You have to take it apart and smear the bush.  :o :o ;D

Jack up the front on one side, support with stands, undo wishbone front bush bolt, lever downwards and wedge a bit of batten above the wishbone bush so that it is just clear enough to allow the poly's to come out. It's in two sections with a centre tube so pull one part one way and the other part the other way and remove from car. Smear copper grease on to any surface that makes contact with anything and refit to the car. If you have any difficulty re-aligning the bolt, you will see that by pushing/pulling the wheel forwards or backwards influences whether the bush moves forwards/backwards/inwards or outwards.  Repeat for the other side.  :y

As TB said, around ten minutes a side.  :y

You could give the bushes a healthy squirt of WD40(or whatever you favour) and see if the noise changes. If it does, then doing a proper job is worthwhile. Shouldn't take more than a couple of minutes.

Hey, that's an idea Nick :y I have Plus Gas and WD40 here. Worth a quick fix ;)

Only if you're on a bike, as the very slight curve makes for much clenching as you land. Apparently.

I assume Halfrauds will sell that copper grease stuff.
Only ever buy the original Molyslip stuff. All the others are a poor imitation, and "wash away" too easily.

Thanks TB...I'll look for that. I assume its a Halfrauds thing :y
