Title: Watch Repairs
Post by: Sir Tigger KC on 26 April 2016, 17:54:31
As a community of DIYer's does anyone do their own watch repairs here?  ???  How hard can it be?  :-\  ::)

I took my Casio Edifice to a jewellers for repair today and was quoted £91 for a new winder, glass and general clean.  :(

Watch making tools can be bought fairly cheaply, so if I can find the parts for a reasonable price.....  ::)   I'll have a go!  :y

Any advice?  :)

Not owning a watch (much to the annoyance of big bro) or any other jewellery, I've never felt the need....

Yes, if you want it to ever work again, pay the £91. Is that really a lot? Figure on £15 for the glass and winder, which leaves £75 for a couple of hours work.

As for how hard can it be, take a look at this photo:

That's the crown, base plate and pinion from an Eta 2824 a very common automatic.
The baseplate is 26mm diameter, 2.97mm thick and you're looking  the simplest side. The pinion is 5.6mm diameter, 0.17mm thick and has god knows how many teeth around the edge! I can't pick up the screws without a very fine pair of tweezers.

The only cheap watch tools worth buying are the Jaxa type case back openers and strap changing tool. I took that movement apart using a set of 5 Eclipse screwdrivers that cost £12 at a show, which is probably a third of the normal price(going on what he was charging for common Eclipse stuff)

Before anyone asks no, I had no intention of reassembling this even before I lost some of the smaller bits

I paid £60 for it and a bit of research shows that I can buy another for a similar price.  ;)  I still fancy 'aving a go though!  :y

I quite understand, so buy some good screwdrivers and tweezers to make a start.  Ensure you're sitting at a clear bench, covered with one sheet of clean paper, with plenty of light. The parts are TINY so a big magnifying glass is a good idea

Back in the 80's I took a fake Rolex into a Jeweler to see if he could do anything about the missing winder that had fallen off (Perpetual Type, a good one).

He looked at it, took it out the back, moments later I heard some banging noises, then returned with it in bits and all smashed up, I was a bit stunned to say the least, but it turns out the shop was a Rolex Dealer, and He was under Instructions apparently.  >:(

I was a bit gobsmacked tbh, when he returned he was assisted by two other shop members, it took a while to sink in, must of been on one of my better days thinking its probably not a good idea to kick off inside a Jewelers.

I also have a broken TAG which I will bite the bullet and get repaired properly.  I know that it will be painfully expensive though!  ::)  :'(
