Now I have sold my 3.2 Irmscher Estate, I have decided to go for a diesel.
What sort of fuel consumption can I expect?
I was only getting 18 out of the 3.2 :-\ :-\
Are there any mods, to improve consumption? Remap??
Thanks
Colin

Give us a clue what you have in mind ;)

I had a 2 litre Mazda diesel estate , on my daily 54 mile commute it returned 46 MPG on good A roads on a long run almost 60 MPG, don't know what make you are considering.

A diesel what? ???
VW Phaeton gets about 30, yet a Golf should do nearer 60.
Bit like asking how long is a bit of string :)

And a 3.0 / 3.2 Manual LPG does about 45 to 55 mpg, (doing the the maths at cost of LPG vs Diesel)

Oops. sorry guys, an Omega of course :y :y
-
2.5TD or 2.2DTi
If 2.5TD is it auto or manual?

What actual MPG? 3.2 Auto will barley do 25 on petrol, so best case 20 on LPG so that means 35-40 ish mpg on the wallet for me :-\

Hi Colin,
I've been watching the mpg on the 2.2 DTi that I bought a couple of weeks ago and at the moment I'm getting 40 to 45 combined mpg. Though the engine hadn't been running right for some of that time due to a vacuum leak so should have a better idea when I fill up next time. Hope this helps.

Get a minimum of 29MPG on petrol on my daily driver, but then I drive mainly motorways every day.

I know it's a manual hence asking real MPG :)

Ok, real mpg, both Lpg manuals, 3.0, 24 to 32, 3.2, 21 to 28.

not sure what I'm getting but it appears to be good. I am quite pleased with mine.

2.2 DTi Estate mix of urban and open road 39-40mpg. Have got 46 brim to brim on longer run. Not bad for a big old barge.
-
Thanks guys.
So I guess I am looking for a nice 2.2Dti estate.
Anyone?

I wouldn't rule out a decent 2.5TD Estate (Manual), smoother straight 6 pot over the 2.2 but probably a hard find these days. :-\
or a 3.2 LPG. ;D

...and much thirstier. I get about 25 locally, 33 on a run. Full fat chip and Auto AR35 fitted. :y

As said on tother thread, I wouldn't bother... Fuel pump is a £1,200 bill just waiting to happen :-X

Is there a problem with the fuel pumps then?

They don't respond well to being run dry... Easily done if not primed correctly. Can you guarantee that previous owners have never done this?
If not budget, for a new fuel pump at some point in the not too distant future or hammer the screen price accordingly :y
-
handy to know can't say what's happened in the past but will make sure it doesn't happen in the future. What causes them to fail due to being run dry?
-
That is a bit of a worry.
So is that a good reason not to buy one???

Hum couldn't hammer the screen price as I didn't pay anywhere near £1200 for the whole car. Only paid £795 infact.

I would say so...

Beyond the obvious running out...
Leaking leak off pipes allowing air in, leading to excessive cranking to start when cold.
Not bleeding it correctly when changing the fuel filter or any fuel system components, again excessive cranking...
Basically the fuel in the pump cools the electronics within the pump, not fuel and they burn out. The fuel also lubricates the pump, again no fuel causes rapid, catastrophic wear.

Better off with 2.2 petrol and LPG, just recently done a run to Wales. Averaged 28mpg on LPG, with fuel costing 48.9 per litre from Texaco near the office.
Gave me 0.08 pence a mile running costs, to get the same from a diesel I would have needed to get 60mpg.
You won't get anywhere near that on average from a diesel Omega.
2.2 petrol is a sheer pleasure to work on too :y
-
39.2 average over the winter to and from work, goes up a bit in the summer even with the air-con on all the time which to be honest doesn't seem to make any difference to the fuel consumption. I drive it without trying to be economical as it doesn't make a great deal of difference and I would rather suffer 39mpg than try for 42 and get bored. ;D
As for reliability, hmmm none of these were known in the trade as a "reliable" car so given the amount I have saved in the last 30k or so miles I really don't care. If it pops then I will worry about it then.... I have seen some cabby cars with well over 200k still going strong but as previously mentioned the pumps don't like to be run dry at any time. The pump electronics can be changed cheaply and easily enough (and they are better made) just look on the internet without removing the pump. It really depends on what you want from a car.

TD auto is poor compared to manual, for economy.

3.0 is the best, obviously. More economical and more powerful

No, but just be aware of the possibility...
