Title: Leaded v Super Unleaded.
Post by: Mr Skrunts on 21 July 2008, 18:25:48
When I had my Carltons there was a switch under the bonnet that could be altered for 95 or 98 ron fuel which I believe was unleaded or super undeaded fuel.

I also noticed the Carlton ran better on Esso rather some other fuels.

Would Super Unleaded help or hinder my V6 Miggy.

Also has anyone noticed if there is a difference on ecconomy or performance from Brand to Brand.

TIA.   :y

I've heard that Super unleaded can give a performance advantage in very high performance cars.

I've tried it in my V6 Omega but to me it makes no perceptible difference.

I'd save your money if I was you :y :-*

The only difference I've ever found is that Tesco99 ron burns quicker than any other fuel I put in the tank, on my V6....

Yeah been there :-X..........don't notice any major difference, so just stick to normal unleaded, only use BP garages ::)

Only ever had one car that there was a noticeable difference between leaded and super-unleaded and that was a 1.9 Peugot 205Gti. Don't think performance was much different but engine just seemed to run better. :-?

Higher octane doesn't mean more power (if anything, the greater percentage of additives may actually reduce the calorific value of the fuel).

It means it can be burnt in a highly tuned engine with a greater margin over detonation occurring which is where the fuel burns in an uncontrolled manner causing a great deal of mechanical stress and excess heat, and, if it goes unchecked for more than a few seconds, causing serious damage.

Knock sensors are there in modern engines to detect this and respond by retarding the ignition and, on turbocharged engines, sometimes reducing the boost pressure. This reduces the performance of the engine.

The upshot is that it makes a great deal of difference to those who run highly tuned or turbocharged engines. The engines used in the Omega aren't turbocharged nor particularly highly tuned so they are unlikely to go into knock retard on 95 octane fuel, meaning there is unlikely to be much to be gained from Super Unleaded.

Hi,
I had to use super unleaded some weeks back as thats all there was available at all night garage. Never made a scrap of difference to the running of the engine.

What did give me grief was tankfull of Jet garage fuel. EML light continually on and check was Catalytic convertor low efficiency problem.  Fine when I finally got tankfull of Shell.

I only ever noticed the difference when I used it in my bike... Never seen a difference in a car though!

Probally going off track here, but I notice a big difference between Super Diesel and Standard.

Lots more MPG and smoother running.

As for petrol in My MV6 no difference, it seems to like Shell though for very slightly improved MPG, which suprises me cause I all ways thought Shell was the worst of the Big Ones?.

i tried some super last year but didnt really notice the difference. got it with a 5p off/l tesco voucher so didnt really cost more. i use tesco or shell all the time as they are cheapest and closest and i get clubcard points!
don't really drive enough to do good comparison testing tho.

my bro on the other hand drives 500 miles a week in a volvo s40 and notices an mpg increase on super that more than pays the difference! go figure....
