Title: Another National Lottery rant . . . .
Post by: Mister Rog on 25 May 2016, 07:35:10

National Lottery, Lotto, or whatever you want to call it, was intended to provide money for "good" causes whilst offering the chance of winning some cash.

I now see that TV programmes are appearing "Sponsored by National Lottery" IE Britains Got Talent.

So, not only have they increased the ticket price from £1 up to £2 not so long ago . .

The increased the number of balls from 40 to 50 making the odds of winning even worse than they were before

They are now throwing cash at promoting themselves on TV, cash that should be used for the good causes  >:(

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr . . . . . . The plot is lost. Time for a change.

The world works in a strange and infuriating way nowadays, Rog. Totally different to what we were brought up with. It's pointless trying to fight it, so just chill, enjoy your Welsh surroundings and hang on to your £2.
I really wish I wasn't compelled to watch the news all day long, but I can't help myself.  :(

They have become greedy  >:( I used to have a couple of lines a week as it was a fun little thing to do that cost less than a pint and I might have won some money but also because it helped charities out there.

Now I don't bother as the way it's setup now means it costs twice as much, the odds are halved yet the prizes are no better.

Brown from memory.

About 35+ years ago I was in a B&O Retail Shop looking a New Toy called 'Home Video Recorders', think the B&O ones where going for about 600 quid, anyway I said to the Shop Keeper "I'll give you Half a Crown" for it, he reply was "If you can pull out of your pocket Half a Crown now, you can have it", needless to I couldn't.  :(

For the next 20 odd years I carried a Half a Crown in my pocket, and tried it on in just about every time I was shopping for a high value item, and yes, not one person even bit on the deal " I'll give you Half a Crown for it".  :'(

Still have a few quid on it each Wednesday & Saturday , refuse to watch BGT so didn't know they sponsored that awful excuse for entertainment. Won £4,000 a few years back so perhaps that  makes me stay in it.

Double diamond, 1s 10d (9p) a pint when I was 15. My £1 pocket money got me 9 pints and meat and potato pie and chips on the way home.
My double diamond and pie and chips seldom made it all the way home with me.  ;D

Just about remember Farthings  :-[ ( Farthing the tiny coin. Please remember the "h"  ;D ) and certainly the old Threepenny bit

Moving on . . . . how come we were quite quick to decimalise the currency, slower to go metric on other things like liquid measures and weights, but some things just seem to keep hanging on.

Fuel consumption - MPG. Distances - Miles. Body weight - Stones, and a few others. When are we going to go metric on everything, or is it STEMO that keeps it all alive.

Or you could switch to your local Air Ambulance lottery, if they do one. I do the Wiltshire Air Ambulance lottery. It costs them 2.5Million/year to keep the helicopter flying and the only funding they get is from donations. OK so you carnt win big money (1k jackpot/week + £25k super jackpot) but its a worthy cause, imo.  :)

Tbh, other than beer (pints) and distance (miles) I think it's pretty much gone now in the younger generations. My best friends wife is 27 and she measures her height in meters and weight in kgs. My mate and I (34 and 32 respectively) are a bizarre cross over cohort. I measure myself in feet, obviously use miles but measure everything else in cm/m. Weight for me is lbs and stone, weight of anything else is g/kg.

I suppose it must have made sense at the time, but lot of the imperial stuff makes nil sense to me. Rods poles and perches, chains, fathoms and leagues etc etc.  ??? Being the simpleton I am, I like just dividing or multiplying by 10/100/1000.

Oo, just thought of something else that's hung on to imperial. Livestock. Horses measured in hands, animals sold in guineas.

I drive my wife nuts, not with my irresistable charm, looks, and physique, but because I use Kg for my weight and I'm trying to lose some. She has no idea what I'm talking about  :y

There are some things you just can't metrificate  ;D

For instance, a cricket pitch, wicket to wicket, is one chain or 22 yards.

There are other things where it doesn't matter. For instance, a fat bastard is a fat bastard in pounds or kilos.  ;D
