I had Autoglass come to change a cracked screen on the Elite this morning and when he finally got the screen out,'dangle berries'! tin worm along the bottom of the screen recess...some surface and some you can push a screwdriver into, and then the surprise bit, can't put the new screen back onto rust as it's a safe and helfty issue. Car is now wrapped up to protect it from the impending biblical thunder and lighting : :o:)So between SWMBO and myself I decided to scrap the car as the logistics of moving the car 15 miles to the body shop by loadloader and the ensuing repair bill had sort of decided its fate. But as usual I had second thoughts and it's now arranged for a couple of weeks time...am I a mug or what? ::)

There's a caveat in the small print, iirc you can sign a waiver...
-
That's a bit of a bu***r !
I'm half expecting something similar with mine sometime soon. Though right now I can't see anything. I'm just naturally pessimistic :(

Thanks for that Al,but zero paperwork at all times and no mention of a get out. But after a bit more thought on this I think I would prefer to get it put right. If it were only surface rust I would have got on and dealt with it,but the deeper stuff is going to have to be removed and new metal welded in, hopefully it should see me out ::)

Just been thinking on this a bit more, and I guess I've got two more shots at a load of grief sitting on the drive....but! there's no way am I going digging around to find it ::)

If its not structural could you not fibreglass it with a tad of filler ,or is it worse than i imagine?

Screen is structural...

A couple of patches around 6cms long and the width of the screen recess, but definitely able to push through.Could bodge it, but this guy was on the ball and said that it had to be repaired properly otherwise leaks and wind noise could occur. Also as it's going to the body shop they are going to strengthen the Irmy bumper on its weak points as it has the usual cracks on the top and also repair the speed bump damage on the underside, plus repainting that and the bonnet....think the car's worth it as it's still a joy to drive :)

Just another snippet from this mornings conversation with the Autoglass guy,he said that it is now policy...even on a motorway that if rust is evident on windscreen removal then that's it you are stranded with a big drafty hole in the front of your car and fingers crossed that you have recovery....wonder wether this is another EU made up rule :-\

can't you just put a pair of goggles or a motorcycle helmet on and drive it the 15 miles.
John.

Better make sure the repair is spot on, or the screen won't fit. ;D

Yes you can :)

As to the goggles suggestion,I must admit that it did cross my mind just drive the car over there, but as Al says it's structural, so not sure what effect it would have on the car,and with my bad luck I will definitely bump into the only cop within 25 miles of home and he will probably have a BSc and a couple of ologies in motor engineering and construction and he will kick my ass.....so that's a no then. And Stemo,Blind Bill is doing the welding so nothing could possibly go wrong :-\

I discovered similar when mine was done, although not as bad. But because I was using an independent we cleaned it up as best we could and then sealed it before fitting the new screen. Only issue was that it could crack again.
I'm currently considering making the best out of 2 cars, meaning the bodywork of the older one wins slightly :-\

Thanks to Autofarce forgetting as well as bare-faced lying to me about getting my new screen in, I had to make an early morning drive, screenless from the bodyshop to my home, to then get the new screen fitted later the following week.
I know that 'I did it once' isn't really the same as it being legal or right, but I did. We fitted a polycarbonate temporary screen the next day, which really looked the biz, actually!
I, at least, was fortunate in that I knew the screen frame was very very rusty beforehand, hence why it was in the bodyshop. Hope you get sorted one way or another. :)

It's all in hand....sort of,it might be a week or two until they can get round to it,but the only alternative was to scrap the car, and having just looked at the bills since I bought the car back in 2012, I will have just wasted the many hours of effort put in by Daz,James V6,Al {aka HTK} and Serek, plus the body repairs and full respray, the list is scary. If I hadn't had that reality check then it would have gone to Rob G's Omega recycling facility and may have netted me a couple of hundred quid, put that up against a running total of nearly 6 grand invested, then it's a no brainer really......me being the no brainer ::)

You shouldnt let the money side get to you, and you do right to carry on with the car, versus the usual 'ooh, this has cost me too much money sell it' philosophy.
At present, you have one 'big job' (not even a big bill, really) to sort. For your 6 grand you've got yourself - presumably - 80, 90% the car you want. Go out to any garage forecourt and see what 6 grand can buy you, then see if it gives you electric everything, massive boot, comfort, smooth ride (what has a smooth ride these days?? everything's fidgety and 'sporty' to please motoring journalists) knowing this was the very best Vauxhall could do in the day, and their flagship model.
I wouldnt feel bad about your spending, of course it racks up to criminal levels that will make you/most of us cry, but it always does. Even my Eberneezer Scrooge spending has run into ofour figures in the last year and a bit. But again, don't let it get to you, sort this out, and no doubt a few other niggly jobs and you'll be there. Keep the faith :y

Agreed, and usually I never count the cost of running the Omegas,as anyone that knows me on here hopefully will agree. It was the fact that we looked at the viability of yet another repair and the potential sidelining of the car for at least two weeks and I would hazard an educated guess of more like a month, that was the point when cutting our losses was an option and of course we decided against that option in the end. ;);)So it's just a bit of a bummer that I'm going to lose the car for a while, and not the cost as I have a sort of rolling programme for all three cars and that car was due up at Serek's this coming Friday...so it sort of messed the plans up a bit ::)

Any chance of photos of the area before and after? :)
