I've always liked vauxhalls. That is up to about 5 years ago. Probably stems back to my Dad's 1980s Cavaliers. I loved my own 1987 Astra and 1986 Cavalier. Then my 1997 Veccy and now my 2000 V6 Mig which I shall drive until it gives up on me.
But more recently, what is there from the Vauxhall line-up which you would really want to own? (apart from a Holden Monaro of course but that does not really count). I was just met by a colleague at Warsaw airport in an Opel Antara. I'd never heard of this compact 4 wheel drive ugly duckling. So I just googled it and believe it or not it is available in the UK as a Vauxhall. It's the ugliest thing you ever did see and being driven in it is terrible. Even the guy who owned it didn't like it!
There are rumours that the new Vectra might look OK but on recent form I'm not confident that Vauxhall can design a decent looking car any more.
So as a marker of a car's following and status, who thinks there anything from the current vauxhall range which might generate enough interest to support a forum as active as this one?
-
i agree, apart from the monaro, none of the current range would interest me. :(
-
yep me!!! i`ve just changred the thermastat on my friends calibra and now the ruddy fan wont kick in!!! so it looks like he now needs a new fan relay.....unless anyone else can think of sumat else causing the problem??
-
Interestingly on this weeks TopGear Clarkson said that Vaux were the only make to not have an ugly model in the range :)

It's been available for a few years, although I've only ever seen the odd few. Coincidently I saw one yesterday being driven to the local dealers

I wonder if he's never seen the latest incarnation of the Courser then?!
:-?

ooohhh - hang on. I just went to vauxhall's website. The new Insignia does actually look pretty OK. This must be Vectra replacement.

Is that the one that looks like the Honda :question

there is very little in the 'normal' car market that 'floats my boat' these days
BMW looks like Merc, or worse still like a noddy car
Audi look like Jap cars these days
Jap cars look bland and unexciting
Renault have the award for the most ugliest looking cars out there currently
the new insignia looks like everything else out there on the road, nothing separates it from everything else
and that's the problem, we are getting to a point now where all cars are starting to look the same, no one is prepared to stick their head up from underneath the design parapit and be bold and different
well there is one car that has tried
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v104/doctor13702/Citroen-c6-05big.jpg)
there is nothing like it on the road having borrowed one for a weekend on trial i can honestly say they look unique, drive superbly and have more feature than you can shake a dirty stick at.
and they are reliable, despite what people say
-
It might look nice but so does the latest Vectra. If it drives as crap as the Vectra and if the indicators are as useless and if it pours rainwater on your luggage everytime you open a wet tailgate and if the 1.9CDTi [150] auto is so dangerously hesitant when you put your foot down into a gap on a roundabout and many other things i hate it for then I'm going back to Fords or I might even look at a Skoda. What am I thinking? I'll get another Omega and run it into the ground. >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( Now where's my inhaler.....?

Nice thought about the Citroen, but the XM looked as stylish as that some years ago and who'd touch one one now?

i think the problem from our point of view is not so much the looks as the fact that vauxhall (along with ford and probably other high volume manufacturers) decided to get out of the luxury end of the car market .they have a long history of having a large, comfy rwd flagship model (which they probably lost money on), but the bean counters probably conviced the marketing men that the brand could survive without such a car.so for people like us ,who buy these cars, usually after they have lost most of thier value, there is,nt anything that we can look forward to buying in 6 or 7 years time for a fraction of what some relatively wealthy person or company paid for it from the showroom.

I'd just like to put a word in for the humble Holden Commodore. We see the VXR8, and I for one might be tempted by one ;) if circumstances permitted, but there is a whole range behind it that Vauxhall could tap into.
http://www.holden.com.au/www-holden/action/vehicleentry?vehicleid=4
A 3.6 V6 Commodore should be the ideal replacement for an Omega. And there are 6.0 models to be had for much less $$ than the Clubsport R8/VXR8.
Why can't the Vx bosses try some of these out? I'm sure they'd sell some if they were priced attractively.
-
If you follow the link on my previous post, you will see the 60th Anniversary SS-V 6.0 for Aus$55,690. That's about £26,786, or roughly the list price of the top of the range Vauxhall Vectra. :(

Did fall out with Vauxhall but now back again,
Vauxhall / Opels owned
Chevettes loved
MK1 Cavalier loved
Ascona's loved
Manta's loved
MK1 Astra loved
MK2 Astra loved
MK3 Cavalier loved
1997 Vectra, hated it
When looking to replace said Vectra looked at newer shape vectra and hated it, so went and bought a Volvo, loved that. But now just come back and bought a 2005 Astra Design 1.8 auto with "sport button" woo hoo. makes the car a normal hatchback most of the time, but when needed that little button is a lot of fun.
Vauxhall probably had some bad times from 1996 to 2004ish there saving grace during that time was the Omega.
Just my useless opinion.

Will never fall out of love with vauxhall. I have had a lot of vauxhall's over the years and to date my 3.0 V6 is the best but i do want to try the vectra VXR as that looks like a lot of fun, the VXR8 and the monaro. Yes they stopped making the omega and it was a very sad day when they did but they are still making good driver's cars.
-
It's not just Holden that make great big cars in Oz. F*rd make some crackers too.
Take a quick look at this link.

After a long string of company Vauxhalls, I never thought I'd actually choose to buy one. But I did - twice! So they can't be that bad.
A quick 8-) for the VX220 - also sadly no longer available.
-
I've owned cars for 40 years. My Omega is the first Vauxhall I've owned, although I once had an (LPG) Opel Ascona as a company car when I lived in Holland.
I used to drive Granadas, and there's not really a lot of difference between a top of the range Vauxhall and a top of the range Ford, although I wasn't too happy with the last, hatchback style Granada. It is a pity that the big saloons from the mass market manufacturers have all gone. They represented exceptional value for money.
I love my Omega, but given the choice, I'd go for a Jaguar any day. :) :)
-
Just saw a pic of the Insignia in AutoExpress. Looks pretty good to me - no idea about engines, interior and how it will drive though. Due out in the autumn if I remember correctly.
-
I don't know what it is for me about vauxhalls! I have never had anything else!
I've Had;
Opel Kadett Coupe 1.2s (Not Astra)
Vauxhall Belmont 1.4
Vauxhall Vectra 1.8
Vauxhall Omega 2.2
Vauxhall Omega 2.6 MV6!!
Loved everyone of em! Can't explain it!! :y
With the Exception of my Omega 2.2 only because it was cursed and caused me alloy of problems!!
As for the current Range, I would love a VXR8!
-
i have always been a vx fan and have driven them through most of my driving life, but i cant see which one i would want when omegas are a bit to old to be practical. :-/
-
I keep coming back to VX's mainly because I can fit in them - but seems to be anything with Germanic DNA (VW Bora, BMW E28 525e and Merc 190E also rate with me).
Only ever had one duff Vauxhall - a MK2 Carlton 2.2CDi whose engine expired in a big way - but that was in worse nick that I admitted to myself when i bought it. It was big, black, low and top of the range - must have been a glowing shade of rose on my sunglasses that day...
Loved my Mk5 Astra (1998 - correct?), and a 1.8 Auto Vectra did exactly what it said on the tin. My dad has been a big VX lover as well, having had a Royale and one of the last GSi3000 12v's but keeps sending my ebay links for Lotus versions...He used to be a Police Mechanic in the Senator era ;) and naturally after a service, they had to be tested ::) Not too keen on the latest Astra, but at least there are plenty of Migs to keep me going for a while when (if) upgrade time comes. Given a 70 mile daily commute - not so sure if i'll beat a 2.0 on LPG for pence per mile. For fun time I have my "toys"..
-
I am not a fan of GM, and think that they deserve the situation that they are in. However, strangely, I very much like the 2 Vauxhalls that I have and one of them is my first real project car (as in more than just an engine/gearbox/axle rebuild).
However, these 2 are no longer in production despite being less than 10 years old, so from the current range there is nothing that interests me - but that can be said of several car brands that I have been a huge fan of over the years.
-
As already posted i'm not a diehard VX fan.
Viva vs Escort, Ford wins. Chevettes were cool.
Victor vs Cortina, Ford wins.
Cresta/vicount/ventora etc vs Mk1 or 2 Granada, Ford wins.
FWD escort vs Astra, VX wins.
Late Granada vs. Omega, VX wins hands down.
Nobody's perfect!!!!!!!!!!! 8-)

I do like these new Vauxhalls Insignia, Monaro but i can't afford one being honest..... but I would buy the Astra VXR in red as I love the look of them.
I too have had VX's for years now, I have always been happy so I will be sticking with them :y
