Get your insurance sorted, then tax it online.  :y

If it is currently taxed does it not go that this is still "official" until DVLA receives V5 detailing change of ownership? Not saying it's strictly legit, but is this not the case?Insurance obviously would have to be sorted before driving it.

Had similar issues when I recently sorted out change of car for SWTSMBO.

You can get a 2 day temporary cover on insurance ..problem is road tax ,so you will end up paying 1 month or what ever part remains which can be done online at point of sale.

I've done it, phone up and arrange insurance then pickup iPad / Phone / Andriod etc and buy the tax  :y

I'm almost sure if you do a temp cover insurance, say for 2 or 7 days it won't let you tax the vehicle. I could be wrong, but I'm sure I've seen it somewhere :-\ :-\ :-\

Edit...

Thought I'd seen it somewhere http://www.gocompare.com/short-term-motor-insurance/   about 2/3 down the page

I would go with this. It takes a couple of days at least for information on VED to become 'live' on the DVLA database, especially if the vendor 'forgets' to post the old V5c staight away! Its not as though you have an expired disc, or no disc at all to look at these days, an ANPR reader would show it as taxed for a few days after sale, not the same with insurance though, you must get that arranged beforehand, as said above.

If the person you are buying the car from, hasn't cancelled his insurance, and it's still taxed. Just drive it home under your insurance,  also it won't ping any anpr cameras.

It's one of the (probably) unintended consequences of the new disc less tax regime and as is usual the government don't make life any easier for people.  :(

In this day and age, you should be able to tax and insure a car for a day, week, month, year, decade, whichever suits you, not whatever suits the DVLA and the Treasury!  ::)

The new regime is forcing otherwise law abiding folk to carry out 'iffy' practices to get cars home after purchase.  :-\  We should write in or something!  ;D

I don't get it, it very easy as above - you just pay for a month which is about £20 so no big deal.

Fine if you're buying a car to use immediately, but if you want to just get a car home and SORN it, then it's not easy to do properly.  ::)

As has already been pointed out you can't tax a car on a temporary insurance policy, so all the other solutions are a grey area at best and illegal at worst.  If you had an accident on your way home relying that the car was still taxed from the previous owner, you may well find your insurance declining to pay out.  ::)

you have not said where the car is coming from & is it under british plates.  that can make a difference . if it is , then your current insurance may cover you if you are allowed to drive a car that's not owned by you but with owners consent. some countries do not have the same vehicle tax system as the uk. so wherever the car is currently registered can make a difference, theoretically you could be importing it.

You dont need Insurance to Tax a Vehicle anymore, its been like that for a few years now, the system only checks for a valid MOT on the DVLA Data Base.

By Taxing a Vehicle you are self declaring you have a Insurance in force for the Car, or you are Insured to drive the Car, the system will sill let you tax it even if no Insurance is showing on the MID.

It is, but it allows you to tax a car without waiting four days for the MID to update ;)

when I bought mine I phoned my insurance company for a quote and they kept everything on file. the following day after I bought it I phoned them from the car sales place to activate it. Then did the tax on my phone via the internet all done within 15 mins.

I can confirm that I did exactly the above, temp cover and then paid for a months tax both at the time of collection. I believe this leaves me fully covered as the car was both insured and taxed when I drove it. Slightly annoying to have to pay for a whole months tax but really not a big deal and I wanted to be sure in the event of an accident on the way home.

It seems like a massive grey area really.  :-\

Its only a grey area because of miss information supplied, if you talk to the Post Office, DLVA and your Insurance Co they will probably tell you, you need Insurance in place to Tax, and the System will check for Insurance on a Data Base at the time of the Tax application, it probably did or still does, the problem was on the old system there was so many vehicles with Insurance in place but not showing on the system, mainly due the Data Base relied on the Insurance Companies or Brokers to update the System which could take anything from 12 Hours to 5 Days to show up, The Post Office / DVLA could then by-pass this by proof of Insurance being presented at the time of application.

The next issue came with the introduction of No Tax Transfers of Sold Vehicle anymore, The DVLA needed a 'No Excuse Tax It before You Drive It' policy in place to Enforce this, so the System was set were you could effectively Tax your Car at 3 o'clock on a Sunday morning if need be, by either Telephone or Online, so in order to achieve this the Insurance Check was suspended and only correct Vehicle detail info (Log Book) and Mot was the requirement. In fact they suspended the Insurance check about a year before the new Tax rules came out back in 2013 but that wasn't common knowledge.
