Not well respected it seems. :-\
Most of the people he will have to deal with see Boris as a bumbling buffoon at best. Or worse still, a cretin.
Can't help thinking our new PM has made her first mistake. :-\

Was talking to a couple of Polish friends the other night re Boris, I thought their definition of him was quiet accurate.
'Lights the Fuse then runs for he's life !'

She's put the high profile Leave campaigners in public positions where they not only have to make good on their promises but show some measurable results, something most of them have never had to do before. If they fail, she will be able to label them all as useless self-abusers, and reduce their power base. If they succeed, she'll be hailed as a master of politics.
The gamble is whether she can hold things together long enough to reach a conclusion.

I think that Boris gives the impression of a buffoon to put people off their guard. This gives him an advantage over them.
Hes no fool, but it takes a clever man to play a fool.I read somewhere that he is fluent in 4 languages, which suggests a brain behind the buffoonery.
This job will either make him or break him. If he is capable of turning into a serious statesman this is his chance to prove it. If he is just a "character" with no real depth, he will soon be exposed.
I think Nick W is spot on in his observation.
I will be surprised if David Davis does anything other than an excellent job. He has been the only Tory who has seriously impressed me for at least 20 years.
Time will tell.

I don't think it matters whether EU leaders like Boris or not. We're leaving so they're not going to like anyone we send! ::) ;)
-
If May thinks that those whom she appointed can/will take the blame if it all goes tits-up, she does not know politicians - or the public. Politiciams will protect their own arses first and foremost and the public will know that SHE appointed the team to do the job, so must accept overall responsibility; we know where the buck stops.
Boris is NO fool and anyone dealing with him who assumes that he is will be in for a surprise. Hiding in a clown's oersona has served him well up to now, but I will guess that soon he will emulate Prince Harry (Henry 1V, Part 1) and his "reformation, gleaming over his faults, will show more goodly and attract more eyes than that which has no foil to set it off" and suddenly become the serious statesman that he has been keeping under cover until he was ready to take on the top jobs.
From FS to PM is a fairly short step.....
Ron.

Exactly sir Tigger. It matter not if they do or don't like him. What matters is that we end up from from the EU without damage to our economy in the near future. If those concerned sort that out properly, they will be remembered for generations to come. :y

Nah.....he's a tit. ;D

I agree with BigRon, I think he has an impressive brain under the - deliberately IMHO - clownish demeanour. I heard an interview with a colleague on the radio the other day, who said he is the quickest brain he knew in reading someones intent. He is also a cunning linguist which should help, as well as having dual citizenship with the US. I think we may all be pleasantly surprised at his abilities in this job. :y
-
He may be highly intelligent but does he possess common sense?
-
He's been booed at a 'do' at the French Embassy tonight! ::)
-
That's the French for ya. ;) ::)
-
Common sense? It took a great deal of that to achieve what he did as Mayor of London and as representative for London abroad, bringing in lots of business for our capital city.
Does anyone remember the great recent television series that he presented, based on his book "The Dream of Rome", in which he demonstrated deep insight and careful research, resulting in a fascinating and informative documentary.
That TV series saw him travelling throughout the Roman Empire in order to uncover the secrets of the governance of the empire, and the reasons behind why the Romans held such power and prestige for so long - highly relevant for today, I think, and in his new job as FS!

Why oh why oh why is there all this negativity all the time. The country voted out, and that is that. The BBC are daily pumping out crap and doom. Making mountains out of molehills.
As an example...during the campaign, the 'Battle Bus'....... sign written with '£350 million to the EU. Lets fund our NHS.' Now where on that bus did it state that we would fund the NHS to the tune of £350 million. Twisted reporting again.
When I see people on the street being interviewed, they are all positive, whether they voted to remain or leave. Why the hell can't the 'upper echelon' be the same and get this country on the up. Still trolling doom and gloom >:(
Rant over :y

Boris did a good competent effective job in two terms as Mayor of London. This is Boris the political operator.
Boris the showman IMO is tacky.
Boris the buffoon he learn't from Reagan, if you are not taken too seriously by the opposition, you get much more done, much quicker where you are underestimated. But he IMO can be too clever for his own good.
The left Remainers have their knives and intolerant out against us Leavers, not only in the UK but all over Europe, where they, know, just know what is best for all of us, at all times, in all circumstances! :( Boris as a the Leave figurehead is the devil incarnate, he has just got 17.8m votes for a round Earth, that orbits the sun. Many Remainers are pushing back as conventional left-wing wisdom dictates the Earth is flat and is at the centre of the universe. I push back with my first sentence normally as my Twitter reply as deeds are worth a million politicians words.
Like all exceptional people he has his flaws, like Churchill and Thatcher who didn't do bad when push came to shove, nor will Boris.
Like with Lloyd-George, just make sure if he is paying you visit, you lock up your wife and daughters as he has a reputation, like Lord Opti as an expert swordsman! :o :o :o

I like Boris and find him a warm and engaging character. I do find his appointment as Foreign Secretary a little bizarre, but listening to him speaking on the steps of the Foreign Office about repositioning Britain's place in the world was a breath of fresh air after all the doom and gloom recently! :y
What this Government MUST do though is ensure that we are out of the EU and it's all done and dusted before the next election in 2020, otherwise that election will be all about the bloody EU and we HAVE to move on from that! :y
-
I was speaking with a woman this morning who insisted we are no longer a part of the EU. :-\
People who voted out want to see a bit more movement, especially as we now have a new PM.
Get on with it. :y

I'm not, Mr Rods.
I voted remain and I lost. It happens. I'm happy to go with the majority who want to get things moving. :y

If it comes to pass, it will take years and years and years to unravel it all. Just two areas to think about. Foreign owned companies in the UK employing mainly UK people. Secondly UK owned companies operating in EU countries employing mostly none Uk staff. The complexities are mind boggling when you start digging. Pensions, workers rights for example. Should boost the GDP of Europe including the Uk with all the people needed to unravel it all. Some great job opportunities there for folk.

I quite agree. The Beeb is still commissioning programmes which have sly sideways digs at leavers. (David Aaronovitch yesterday). Because they were on the side of Remain, they are pumping out. 'Yah boo, sour grapes programmes,' yet it will be some years probably, before, what I believe, will be the successful emergence from our entanglement with the sinking ship which is the European Federation. >:
It also rather amusing to see the SNP, desperate to remove themselves from the Union, being equally desperate to join the failing EU. You gotta larf. :y

IF, and it is a big IF, but if the EU goes go tit's up then 'wee Jimmy Krankie' from north of Hadrian's wall is going to look ever so slightly silly.
