ON all used cars I buy, the instrument display is dim as the bulbs are either out or blackened. Vx sell them, at hot prices. Is there a cheaper supplier?

EBay.

My panel showing Petrol consumption, outside temp ,etc is very dim it does change with the adjuster but certainly on a bright day I cannot read it. Is it a big job to get to the bulbs.

Are you talking about the info display that uses 501 sidelights same as the dash. Or the warning lights on the dash that uses grain of wheat bulbs 286 t5
You can get 20 for 2.50 on the bay

That panel is rear lit by 4 bulbs. I bet yours are as old as the car. On every used car I buy one task is to change them. It's an easy job, the whole instrument display is held in by 2 concealed screws, as described in the maintenance guide.

Just changed mine. Note the old pair here are blackened after years of use, the new pair are clear. These bulbs are on all the time the engine is running, whereas all the rear are rarely on, so these gradually dim.(https://www.dropbox.com/s/9zu3g7676wav3nu/bulbs.jpg?dl=1)

I made the mistake of doing that on one of my Capris. I don't know what I was thinking, as I always have the panel dimmer turned down(always, on everything I drive). The damn lights were so bright I had to put the original bulbs back.
Modern cars are particularly bad for me as they have so many light sources. And why do manufacturers insist on making them coloured? Pale green is OK, but bright red, or worse still, blue are especially annoying. I keep saying this, but Saab's black panel idea is something I wish had become more common.
