Sharp tap downwards (towards dash) will release it from the mount affixed to the screen

not wishing to contradict the keeper of records, but isn't it a sharp tap up, on bottom of mirror mount?..

What about sliding the grey part down without damaging the ball joint

You should be left with a  black clip

I recommend a lump hammer. Not just on the mirror...everywhere. :)

Thanks chaps. A smart downwards tap eased it off.
Cheerful scrappie rang before collection, when he heard he was collecting a Vauxhall Omega he said 'don't see many of them these days'. 'When you arrive here you will see five', I replied. He seemed duly impressed.

I'm sure he was visualising them in his crusher, Terry.  ;D
