My brother has bought me 2.6 cd off me and I'm looking for something to replace it with. Starting a new site in Sept which will mean 100 miles per day travel. I dont mind the miles if I have omega level comfort and power. Been searching ebay and the trader and the only decent omegas are all auto's. Are the auto's much worse on fuel than manual and are there any decent alternatives. Ideally I'd prefer rwd, v6 or better and less than £1k.
-
Have you not seen the other threads? ;D
I'm struggling to find a replacement that ticks all the boxes, I do 50 miles a day of mixed traffic.
Yes the auto's are bloody shite on fuel, but it depends if you are at a constant speed or sat in traffic for large amounts of time. I'd be interested to see what you get for less than £1k, but with that kind of miles, would £1k get something reliable enough? :-\
I'm having issues with ~£5-6k budget to source a decent replacement, to the point of I might as well say sod it and run the 3.2 and take the hit on the fuel bill.
-
It's mostly motorbay and there won't be any traffic to bother me the times I'm going at. Been looking at some s type jags, 3.0 v6 but have no experience or knowledge of them. Don't want something that's going to give no end of grief. Very hard to find something and I'm more than likely going to go for another omega but I'll take a good look at around 1st.
-
Like wise I'm finding it hard to beat a 2.2 on LPG, with cost on the wallet of 50/55mpg.
Might have to be another Omega ;D

Merc w220 S class
BMW e38 7 series
BMW e39 5 series
Volvo v90/960 if you need an estate.
Job's a goodun.

I'll happily use my 3.2 elite but I just don't have time to get it running at the minute, there's no chance it will be ready for Sept. Any advice on the s type jags??
Thanks x30xe I've actually looked at a few merc's online will check out the others as well

That frugal? I am amazed! I'm having a hard time finding new cars that do that kind of mpg, let alone a 10 year old gassed banger (sorry, sorry.. ;)). Makes the 3.2 look like George Best given I never used to better about 27mpg (so, what, 35mpg on gas, equivalent cost?).

My big issue with gassing the 3.2, it'a already crap on fuel, I don't think I could crack 19mpg on gas. So low 30's at best on the wallet? Bit crap!
The 2.2 does about 27mpg on gas, filling it up at 48p a litre near work, means 50+ mpg on the wallet.

Given the budget and the requirements I would be looking at an early LS400. I would be a bit doubtful about getting a half decent BMW or Merc for a £1k budget. Volvos - I know less than nothing about them.
-
Volvo S60's appear plenty full and cheap, diesel and auto's to. Quite a few around for the £1-£2k region.

Good V90s and 960s are rare as hens teeth now and are almost all autos. I had a great 960, lovely cars but they are NOT economical on fuel. Trust me I know ;)

bm and merc far more plentiful than usable ls400s in my experience. especially e39s.
ls400s arent obdII compatible which makes them pretty much impossible to work on as well. Worst car I ever bought.
-
On the basis that I've had two BMWs and blown the engines out of both of them I'd avoid those.Never had a Merc but not too long ago[I think]they went through a period of really bad quality problems.Going on present experience of Volvos I'd vote for a V70,mine's a 2.4 petrol[they're 5pot motors]and on a recent run to Billing-just over 244 mile round trip-at 60-65mph most of the time it returned 41mpg on standard unleaded.

By the way if you go Volvo route avoid the autos like the plague!

They are even more notorious for losing drive than Mercedes or Jag and BMW(same gearbox) automatics, so I don't see how you work that out?
I find the LS400 not being OBD compatible and therefore hard to work on comment odd, as it applies to all of its competitors including Omegas. In 12 years of recovery work, the only LS400 I saw needed a new battery, and the only time I took an IS200 to a dealer was for a knackered ignition lock. If you break a big Lexus, you'll sell the engine and gearbox for engine swaps(they're quite popular in '50s American pickups) plus the CD changer and maybe the instrument cluster. The rest of it, you just throw away because nobody needs to buy it
-
I do the posts here at times, all Volvo, Jag, Merc autos loose drive. ;D
Omegas are "notorious" for cam covers, thrust washers, and all sorts.
Few chaps at work have Volvos with mega miles, no auto box problems.

Have you considered leasing, thats what my daughter and SIL do. Don,t know how much they shell out though. :-\

Not a fan, sorry. Or HPI or any kind of rental system, you don't own the car, too many restrictions. Yes I know some you do own the car, but it's on finance. I just don't like them, but cash is my way.
I like to own my own car :y
Plus at my budget I would be looking at Focus/Astra I would have though. These deals you see a £299 a month have really low mileage limits and you can quickly burn through cash

I agree. Some years ago I was persuaded by the sales guy to buy a brand new car on some finance deal, despite the fact that I could write the cheque. Almost certainly he was on commission. Never again. If I can't afford to just pay for it, I don't buy it. Large companies sometimes look at things differently though.
-
Definitely not a fan of finance or leasing. If I can't buy it outright then I don't need it is my view. I'm seriously considering a jag tbh guys, there are a few decent 3.0 v6 models for not much more than 1k. They seem to be well equipped, I'm told they are more than comfortable and they seem to get decent reviews so might give it a try until a decent omega comes up. End of the day it only has to last me until my 3.2 is up and running and it's not dangerous money at the end of the day.

There was a deal on HUKD for a MG6 1.9D 2015/16 for £99 a month with no deposit for 2 or 4 years can't remember exactly was awhile ago. Not a bad deal for something to take you about. I'm not a fan of these kind of arrangements either, I prefer to own the car.

Err no. The Omega 3.0 is capable of displaying fault codes through the dash. Very slowly admittedly, but at least gives you half a chance. Omega 3.2s are OBDii.
BMW E38 & E39 are also readable with a cheap connector adapter.
So what? They only sold 4 in the UK. Doesn't prove a thing.
Not if the engine won't bloody run proper you can't! Look on a Lexus Forum and look at what real Lexus owners are actually repairing left right and centre whilst nostalgically telling everyone that their cousin's brother's cat once had one that did 500k on one oil change.

LS400s display blink codes just like lots of Japanese cars from the eighties onwards. Even a low production specialist car like an NSX does. It takes a bit of wire. Sounds like the Omega paperclip to me.
Sold 4 of what? Both LS and IS Lexus are everywhere?

Be good to know how you get on with S Type, they are uber cheap. Look a bit fugly though :(

Yeah, but still issue is paying XYZ amount just to own the car, plus the normal running costs.
I'm coming to the conclusion that I need to LPG the 3.2 and get a Zafira for weekends. As nothing else out there at my price range really appeals, other than CLS but looks like bike won't sell for what I need it to.

Ah yeah, I remember now, yes you're right. It is supposed to blink but the one I had wouldn't do it. Presumably because the ECU was fnarked. Good ol' Toyota engineering.
Lexus LS400s. They probably sold 1 for every 100 bmws sold.

I bet it outsold its BMW competitor, the 7series, by quite a large margin.
-
Someone really doesn't like the big LS Lexus :o
I'm more keen on the LS430 mini facelift but the LS400 on the whole is good car. You'll always get a bad egg no matter the brand/model.
How many 7-Series, S Class, A8 etc... Have issues.. Compared to the LS.

German car are more problematic then japs
but still prefer audi or bmw
for example
I got audi a8 6,0 w12 atm FYI 1L of gearbox oil cost £35+vat need 11L of it, gasket and filter other £100+vat, ex labour

Makes the Mercedes M120 engine look much more affordable... Thanks ;D

Mercs bad quality mostly affected the 210 but the 203 is pretty shit, the 170 wasn't fantastic, heard the odd problem with 220's but 215 were strangely a rare sight for problems and everyone knows about 230 roof problems!

Lexus UK sold 426 LSs in 2000. There are probably that many 7 series for sale this year from 2000 still. ::)

There's plenty of problems with the 220s. Still a better car than most other things on the road mind when they're working.

140 would be my wheels of choice, but finding a well kept, rust free one puts them out of my price range for now...

Nope. I don't. And it's not just the fact the POS wouldn't run either. It's just an ocean of cheap nasty plastic. Ride quality is shit. You have to dismantle half the sodding dashboard just to get to the ECU... I could go on.
I never claimed the others were more reliable, I'm just waving the warning flag that Lexus/Toyota are not a beacon of excellence when it comes to engineering and definitely not ergonomics.

They're probably only going to go up in price now too. Which reminds me I must get round to getting an e39 m5 before they're mortgage money :-\
-
And just incase you think that VAG coffee table could get any worse... that's the gearbox end... ;D
Might almost be too late re the M5... :-\
Re the 140s, a V lump would be ideal, but a clean 280 would tick most of the boxes if condition and price were right 8)
Might be slightly underpowered, but this makes it far less likely to kill the gearbox, which can only be a good thing for the cars life expectancy :D
