Title: British Gas must be joking
Post by: Auto Addict on 26 August 2016, 12:51:33
I qualify for a new 'free boiler'.

Boiler £896 (free)

Installation costs £2400 as very little work to do (their comment).

Replacing a non combi with a non combi.

Cost me £2250 to have the same done by an independent back in 2011 (including cost of boiler and removing both tanks).. thought that didn't include the cost of any new rads or fitting TRVs (which I believe is a requirement now?)

'kin hell! :o

Last time I had a boiler change it came to £1k and I thought I'd been ripped off then. :o

.. and all of my neighbours have replaced their non condensing boilers because BG said they were inefficient! Payback period must be longer than the life of the sh1te condensing boiler they'd fit! ;D

Given a top notch boiler and fitting kit is circa 700-800 and its a days work for such a simple install, 1200-1400 all in would be typical (although plumbers for some reason seem to consider they are deserving of premier league rates sometimes)

For quite some time I've regarded BG as just a bunch of con men trading on the old British Gas name, which to some people still wrongly implies good reliable service, value for money, etc.

I would add however, that I now regard most energy suppliers as con men, on a par with dodgy used car salespeople, and even double glazing people.

That's cheap!! They quoted me £4500 for a straight swap combi boiler needless to say had new Worcester Greenstar fitted all in £1500.It took just over half a day!!!

Makes me all the happier that I got an A rated Worcester condensing boiler fitted free a couple of years ago as some form of energy saving programme on my estate , I never knew they were that expensive

If you apply to have a smart meter fitted, when the guy,or gal, comes round they then give you a sales pitch telling you how inefficient you existing boiler, cooker etc. is. Told them not to bother because the Government will force them to fit ,em anyway at some stage. Unless we run out of money that is. :D

Salesman seemed surprised when I didn't jump at the offer, 'How much did you expect to pay for the fitting?' he asked, about £500 I replied.

Slightly off topic.........I rang a local roofing company this afternoon, I have one slate that has slipped and balls of moss or something because of a tree at the front. An hours work, maybe. This is a poxy little local, not a big national. They will send a 'surveyor' around next Tuesday afternoon to give me a no-obligation quote  ;D
I reckon I might say no to that one.

TBH as theres only Mr and Mrs AA in the property I would get a combi....

General rule of thumb 1-2 peeps a combi, more a hot water tank....

I paid a plumber (whose a lecturer at the local college and decided if he didn't know what he was doing then no other plumber would!) £2.5k for the boiler and install......he was here for 2 full days and it wasn't an easy install.....ie boiler on inside wall in kitchen and he had to go through 3 walls (including bathroom) to get to outside for condensate drain and over pressure pipe.

Ive had him back for servicing once so far (next service due in Oct) for the 7 year warranty on the boiler.....Just £40.....so pleased with that as well

Plus my gas bill now is as cheap as chips  :y

My Mother took BG on a replacement boiler years ago, we we all shocked when an indendent plumber turned up and said if we had been a client of hs the same job could have been done for a third of the price. :-\

He also offered a Bronze (turns up within so many days) cover
Silver (turned up next workng day)
                           Gold (24 hr Call out)

He also sad they all ncluded a yearly boiler servce a lot cheaper than BG. ::)

We are currently in the quote gathering stage for replacing our 22 year old Baxi Solo which has been reliable up to the last 2 years when it has had several breakdowns for bits,n,bobs.

We havve had for past 30 years BG service contract for annual service and call outs for breakdown. This year the renewal was £423 due to age/ limited spares availablity and highly inneficient boiler.

Have had 2 local quotes so far ..boiler approx1k..pressure expansion tank approx £100...labour including power flush range from £700 to £1k so looking like sub 2k to 2k plus abit.

BG are due next week,so will be expecting £3.5k to £4k ...have no intention of using them but curious to listen to the sales pitch as I am quite well versed in what is required now.

Used a local plumber, who was recommended by a friend.

Can a plumber do that, or does it have to be BG?
