Hi guys
this concerns my locking fobs on my 2001 XJ8 Jag.
Have 2 keys & 2 fobs (fobs are separate on these) Central locking ,Boot & alarm all work with the keys in the door . . .but cannot get the fobs to work .
Guy i got car from said , fob he was using occasionally started not to operate, then stopped altogether. he then used the 2nd fob which was fine for 3 months then same thing happened to that one.
Obviously i have replaced batteries with good quality ones , still nothing. I have also tried re programming the system with info gained from the jaguar forums . It involves headlamp flashing & that sort of thing . but still no joy .
Cannot seem to get the system into programme mode.
So question is . . how can I test if the actual fobs are working & are actually operating & sending a signal ?
It's not a real problem without the fobs . . .but I have to get the key in the ignition sharpish when unlocking car or the alarm goes off ::) ::)
Any advice ? TIA Al :y

Most reputable key places have a little gismo that they can test the operation of the key fob - it illuminates when it picks up the signal from the key fob, which should indicate whether it's the fob or the car at fault. If you go in the car, then they should be able to pin point whether it's the car or the fob and which isn't communicating with the other.
Fobs do go knackered after a time, generally the contacts under the buttons are the biggest culprit in my experience. Unfortunately fobs arent cheap. But there are are places that can repair your existing fob to keep the costs down, but many also just want to sell you complete new fob, and it's the reprogramming that bumps the cost up.

Martin Imber?

Hi Al
Think you may find that the method of programming Jag fobs to car that involves flashing the headlights 4 times, is for the later X350 models. HTH

Hi Colin
yes you are probably right as there seems to be a few differeces of opinions on the Jaguar forum regarding this.
Have tried several recommended sequences from jag enthusiasts with no joy . . cannot even get as far as the red indicator light by the J gate acknowledging that it is into "programme mode"
Suppose I send both fobs to Martin Imber to be re furbed . . .that way it should eliminate the fobs from being the problem .
Previous owner said first fob slowly deteriorated & then stopped working, he then switched to the 2nd one which done the same over a 3 month period :-\ :-\
