I have a V6 engine and a separate ecu for sale on the bay, but I have had 2 requests for the ecu, and key and steering lock? I think he means steering lock, obviously English is not his first language!
Why would anyone want that?

Immobiliser ring, around ignition

The chip in the key talks to the engine ecu via the immobiliser ring which sits around the key barrel.
All 3 needed of your stuffed ;)

Ideally what you are selling is the following :
Engine Ecu
Immobiliser ring
Chips from all the relevant keys
Car pass (or photocopy)
Anything less is a waste of your time and theirs.

Oh yeh, don't forget the car pass :P :P
-
But why does someone need all that? Is the ecu no good without the rest?
-
And what is the car pass?

The ECU expects to see the chip via the immobiliser ring. If you don't have the full set of matched parts, the car won't start: it would be like giving someone a closed lock without the key.
The car pass has the codes that are required to add extra immobiliser-chips and key remotes to that ECU. Not having it makes doing this job much trickier.

Where would one find the car pass?

Main dealer if you dont have it :y
And i think you need log book and ID in hand

ECU is utter useless without. Unless you have the facilities to reprogram is all.
