Hi all
more advice needed please & this maybe should be in electricals :-\ :-\ . Heating works but not as good as all the previous omegas. Gauge sits at 85 mostly. Thermostat opens as it should . .surge of hot to the top hose etc. Have done a matrix flush this morning . . . some orange residue but not much soon flowed clear , flushed both ways :y
My question is should the 2 secondary pumps be working when the HI heat is on?
I think the pump near the header tank is the "winter pack" one :-\ :-\ but what about the one in front of the battery ? . Neither one of these pumps is vibrating when heat is on . . .is this correct ? Have tested both pumps with 12v & both working when power is applied :y
Matrix hoses . . . the top one is very hot & bottom one is warm but not as hot as the top one . just wondering if the pump/s should be circulating the hot water through the matrix?
Last question . . will there be a fuse dedicated to these pumps ? :-\ :-\

I can't help you much, Al, as you seem to have checked most things, but one thought about those matrix hoses: if the return hose were as hot as the feed gose, the matrix would not have delivered any heat to the cabin! You would expect it to be cooler, surely?

I,m looking in Haynes at the moment for possible fuse to these pumps . although guessing pre face which the manual covers ,may not have had them . will await advice before tampering ::) ::)

I seem to remember that secondary pump was only for circulation with engine off, but i have probably misremembered that. :-\ :-\ :-\

Flush the matrix a couple more times. If it's really blocked, all you're doing is chipping away at the edges of the blockage. The aluminium construction means you can't use an effective caustic chemical.
Mine takes a few days use each autumn for the heater to become properly effective. It was much better when I got home from Spiceland last year, than when I set off.

does it mean it can still be blocked even tnough it has a full flow from the hose then?
i presumed that as there was a full unrestricted flow from my temporary outlet hose into the bucket , that the matrix was clear :-\ :-\

If you google a picture of one, you'll see that the inlet and outlet are on the same side. Which means that the water doesn't have to flow through the entire radiator. If it's really silted up, the water will just go in one pipe and straight out the other. Which means it doesn't work as a heat exchanger.

It doesn't leave much else, does it, if you have full flow now? Is it possible that the HBV is sticky and is diverting some of your matrix flow? Someone on here will no doubt tell you how to check it.....

Changing a HBV is such a faff that I'd spend £20 on a new one rather than attempt to check its efficiency.

Nick, I know ALL about that "faffness"! However, I'm sure I read on here something about detaching and/or blocking vacuum pipes to check function? Are we still in faff territory with that?

Had to shoot over to Rochford (7 miles each way) . . .
Heater now working much much better :y :y
Maybe an airlock from the flush this morning :-\ :-\
But "Toasty hot" in the car now . . .with a pretty decent warm up time as well :y :y
Will see how it performs from a totally cold start tomorrow morning
But job done I would think . . .Happy days ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

That's good, Al - they are pretty good heaters when working properly. They are self-burping too, usually. Did you notice a drop in coolant level in the expansion chamber to confirm this?

Expecting a small top up after the flush . . .will leave it over night & check it in the morning :y :y

Pump on radiator runs when rear fan switches to high speed iirc, might be when rear fan runs. :-\
