Title: Close encounter
Post by: pscocoa on 25 November 2016, 23:40:31
Whilst travelling up to Manchester last week I noticed a noise on acceleration. After a while engine light came on. No performance problems and carried onto destination.  Phoned RAC who said if light on yellow or orange it is ok to drive so they would not come out. Phoned VW who would not say one way or the other as they may be held liable and they could not book me in for a check for a few days.

Anyhow drove it back to Sandhurst - luckily it was the turbo air pipe which for some reason had come unclipped. VW Camberley fixed it in 15 minutes and didn't charge. I had it booked in for turbo check and it has been declared ok. I enquired as to their prices for replacing Turbo if it had gone - £4000. £1500 for part then all the gaskets and oils etc etc plus labour. Turbo's are available on the bay for a few hundred but the engine has to come out to fit.

I think I need to find an indie to see what kind of price they would charge. Phaeton is now 7 years old - looks and drives like new - but is doing 220 x 2 miles every trip plus Cornwall in a couple of weeks. Big decision in new year as to keeping it. £4000 was twice price I was thinking of. Still on original exhaust, batteries and front discs and pads  - if replacing those was only cost then no probs but turbo, gearbox etc means silly money.

Turbo pipes on the vw audi brands do suffer. the fact you have pressure blowing out is a good sign.

Replace the pipeclip/pipe and carry on enjoying your motoring.

I would look at it like this what would you get for it if you sold it ?  If it was a fair price offload it & let someone else face an expensive bill, however if you like the car and can find a reasonable repair at an independent keep it, always a difficult choice . However it may be ok now always a chance it could run perfectly now..

Yikes! That's one helluva price! Is that on the 3.0tdi engine? Wouldn't have thought the price would be that much given how many things that engine is in. As others have said, worth talking to an indie.

When I ran my Saab there were a number of jobs that were supposedly engine out, but when you got to talking to an indie you discovered that wasn't necessarily true. So the labour charge may not be as bad as you think. Also finding a reputable company to recondition the turbo rather than a new unit. Would probably cut the bill in half.

But you say turbo is ok and it was just a pipe?

In which case don't worry about it unless it breaks. You could go out and buy something else and risk a mechanical failure of any kind

What he said..

Main dealer prices are always going to be silly for that sort of work.

Don't forget the icing on the cake...

The rear mounted timing chains ::)

Best budget to get them and the guides done whilst the engine is out :-X

As we all know it's a chance with all cars that something major may fail, better the devil you know as the saying goes.
