Quick question,
If my nearside rear wheel bearing is making a noise will cornering so as to put weight on it make it noisier or quieter ?
I just cant remember which it is.

A much more reliable test is to jack it up, and try both sides. I was convinced mine was the passenger side, but it turned out to be the driver's. As were the other three that I've changed. Which seems to be common on estates.

Your test would be considered a general indication that a wheel bearing is at fault but, its not quite conclusive enough in pin pointing which side as, depending on the failure type, some get noisier when loaded and others noisier when unloaded.
