Probably about 2 years ago I had a dripping cold water tap in the kitchen.....so I did what I usually do....nothing ;D
About a year later its getting to the point where hardly any water was coming out of it and still dripping ::)
So I went to local hardware store and got a tap washer and changed it :y
But they obviously don't make tap washers like they used to or I did something wrong when I changed it, as its now dripping again, a year after changing it >:(
So, I just changed it, old one out, new one in. Are you suppose to add petroleum jelly or summat like on the washer before fitting? :-\
Might change it again tomorrow if I get time, but would like to know if I did summat wrong last time :)

Possibly actual valve body in tap worn

Do taps wear out that quick?.....tap is probably about 7/8 years old.... :-\
-
Most washers, esp from local shops, are shite these days. That's why you can get a paper bag full for 50p.
-
Beg, borrow or actually buy a seat cutter to smooth the seating surfaces. If they are rough then that is why your washers are short-lived because they fail to form a proper seal.
No point in using grease on the washer, it will soon wash away and really not nice if the tap is for drinking water!
If that sails, swap the tap(s) for those nice 1/4 turn taps with ceramic inserts and forget ever needing to be a plumber again..... 8)

Tap ? tap ?
Oh yes those things ! Not got them yet, I send the Mrs down to the well with a bucket ::)

Probably right Steve.....tho I bought a small plastic bag of assorted washers for about £3 iirc as I didn't know what size I needed at the time

When we moved in, I had to change the ceramic cartridges in our kitchen taps to stop them dripping ;D They do fail, Ron.
-
Sorry....ceramic tap glands....is the correct name.
-
Well, I suppose everything fails eventually, STEMO, but they do seem long-lived. The only problem I've heard of with them isn't actually wear, as with rubber or fibre washers, but grit or limescale impeding the action of the ceramic discs if your water supply is hard/chalky.

I got hot and cold two pack from screwfix for £5.50, five minute job to change.

I got fed up with changing washers so I fitted these ceramic cartridges instead of the original innards in our bathroom taps.

That should do the trick.

I know you did Ron :y
But just checking this would do the job and isn't a pile of crap ;D
And while I'm there I think i'll get these too....pull the innards out and put the ceramic jobbies in I bought.
http://www.screwfix.com/p/swirl-h51-a-1-2-reviver-bathroom-basin-lever-tap-reviver-kit/9745p
I know it says bathroom sink.....but no reason it shouldn't fit kitchen taps as far as I know :-\
At the moment I have the round type .... but these would be better with 1/4 turn on/off :)
-
Those tap tops look great and I have them on my bathroom/kitchen sinks, but they aren't so handy in the bath because you can't get precice control of them with your feet when you're in the bath!
That seat cutter looks ok, but I've only ever used the other type shown lower down in the Screwfix site that you linked to, the all-metal one with coneical metal blades - I know they work very well. :y
Ron.
-
Job jobbed ... No more drippy tap :y
The new tap 'handles' look far better too :)
-
Excellent. :y
Just been informed that my challenge is to revive the taps in my step daughter's house over Christmas ;D
-
I like Screwfix. :y
