Hi all,and a happy new year.I have a problem with my cooker,its a gas hob and electric oven.I can switch the power on at the wall,and it will click the hobs on.But when i set it to oven and turn the knob to set the temperature,it trips the trip switch and cuts the power to the house.What would cause this my wife thinks it needs cleaning,but i don't think that would cause it to trip the switch.I assume its had it but i just wondered if it can be fixed.Regards Dean. :y

Most probable the oven heating element. I have replaced several over the years for for family. Quite cheap to buy but can be a little fiddly / awkward to fit depending upon the model.
The trip cutting suggests the ceramic insulation has broken down somewhere, so it shorts to the outer case which is earthed.

Thanks mate,i suppose i should get someone in to look at it.But i don't know if anyone would come out today,and if they can get the parts.Dean.

It will be the element shorting on to the casing, I suggest you wait until after the holidays to call someone out to replace it as the cost could be more than a new oven itself :o
There are shops on e-bay selling replacement elements and it should be quite easy to find the part you need.

I don't know if Ikea is open today but for £105 with a five year guarantee you could swap it out and be using it tonight to make your dinner :y :y :y

I was assuming that the OP's cooker is a freestanding gas hob/electric oven combination :-\

Could be. I have seen so many separate gas hobs built into the worktops with modular electric ovens fitted underneath that I forgot there were other ways of doing it ;D ;D
I've fitted many of the above combinations but never had them myself, prefer free standing gas cooker. :y
I really wish they would bring back the eye level grill, a lot easier than bending down to look in the grill :y :y

Failing that get down to Currys and get one ;)
A half decent combination microwave would also be a cheap temporary fix... Asda or Tescos for that ;)

There is another solution you could try and that is to get a supply to the cooker which doesn't have an rcd. If its damp it may just dry it out as it could just be the beginning of a fault as trips can be very sensitive. Obviously you need to keep an eye on it whilst trying this method and if it works trying hooking it back up to the rcd and the fault may have cleared. You would need an insulation/resistance tester to check the element an stats can cause a problem too.

Assuming it's your cooker, changing the element is an easy job. As said already, find the correct element on ebay or elsewhere online. Find fitting guide using Google or YouTube and it's job jobbed! :y
A new element costs about £30, depending on the model of cooker of course. A lot cheaper than going to Curries for a new cooker! ::) ;)

Or John Lewis, which are normally the same price and include in a 2yr warranty, extended warranties are cheaper with JL as well. Disposal cost of old unit is cheaper with JL as well ;)
Takeaways would be probably cheaper for a couple of days.....until delivery of new one....and don't forget to check Argos ;)
However if the old cooker is a freestanding one, then disconnection of gas/leccy would need an approved electrician/plumber as would the install of new one.....but we don't know that until the OP lets us know :-\

If it's an unfurnished rental then it's likely that the cooker is Moggy's and if he can fix an Omega, I reckon he can fix a cooker! :y
Some of you fellas just like spending other people's money, sending him off to Curry's and John Lewis etc! :o :D ;D

Was working to the fact that he wanted it working today, which last time I looked was a Bank Holiday ;)
If he can do without for a couple of months then he can take his time... but if he wants his tea, and wants it today, then his options are limited ;)

Ste,you are correct and i have contacted the letting agency to let them know.But i contacted them on the 8th of September,to do a property inspection.During this i pointed out the back gate is rotten & the kitchen step has worn away,and letting in water.It took them till the 8th of November to send someone to take pictures,of said gate and step.And i have heard nothing since then,i called them today to tell them about the cooker and they said they will get back to me.So i don't hold out much hope of getting these repairs done,maybe the landlord does not want to pay out.I am going to read the tenancy agreement and see where i stand,thank for all the reply's Dean.

That kind of experience worries me (as a landlord) .. in November the three month inspection was done by the agents (fully managed) who noted a cracked pane of glass (ok, it's been cracked for years, but..) and that the smoke detector has a hair trigger. I authorised both to be fixed (at some considerable cost!) through them the same day they gave me the quote .. and I'm not sure they've actually done the repairs yet as I haven't had a bill despite being chased >:( >:(
I'm sure the tenant will be thinking I'm an evil money grabbing landlord...

That's actually not true, if the gas connection is a self sealing bayonet type:

Similarly, the connection to the cooker for the electrical supply is not considered as anything more than a flying leaded to an appliance and hence is also not deemed as requiring sign off.

Hi all,i should have added in my last post.This is the LL cooker and was installed before we moved in,they said they would call today but so far they have not.Looks like it down to me to fix even through,under clause 3.5 of my tenancy agreement he is responsible.For his gas and electrical appliances.I think i only have two choices to get all the repairs done,send the invoice to the property management company and hope they reimburse me.Or withhold rent till the repairs are done.Dean.

DO NOT withhold the rent, or you could find yourself with a notice to quit and no legal comeback.

You can contact the landlord directly, although I'm not sure if that would do any good. The management company are required to give you the landlords contact details, should you ask.

As a landlord myself, I'd advise to keep on to the Agents and if you get no joy then complain to the LL directly. He's probably unaware of how crap his agent is and if he's a decent sort will be pissed off with the agent. He's paying them good money to look after you and his property! ;)
