During the last MOT, the tester checked all the seat belts by fastening them, but it appears that he had put the middle lap buckle in the wrong (black, no red release button) retainer and I cannot get it to uncouple. This was not a problen until the other day when I wanted to fold the rear seat backs forwards and the engaged belt wouldn't allow it!
If that is unclear, I will attemp to post a photo, but has anyone met this problem before, or know of a solution, please?

Ah, Please read the manual doesn't work here - there isn't a release button, apparently!
I will gave to get my David Bailey out and add a photo, if I can work Dropbox.

Well... if you had a working manual... page 68 would tell you what's what.
Press the black button on top of the buckle, car key will do.
For reference, it isn't possible to latch the wrong clasp into that buckle. ;)

The release button is small and round and black. You cannot press it with your finger so you need to use something like a pencil (but it is easier to use the ignition key)

As has been described, there is a black button on that buckle (where the red button normally would be) that you press (with ignition key, if nothing else useful to hand), to release it.

Done it! Thanks a lot, folks. In all the 6-7 years of owning the car, I've never had to do that.

I always pre fix the rear belts in my cars before going to the test station. The tester can check the latching himself if required but they won't get the wrong buckle into the wrong clasp that way
