Title: 2.6 engine advice needed please.
Post by: mantaray on 04 January 2017, 20:56:43
Background History
I purchased a 2.6 V6 Omega back in December, with a suspected oil cooler failure. I drove the car 60 miles back home with no problems.
The oil cooler was removed and pressure tested, and found to be good. As the cooler looked new, I concluded that the cooler had been replaced recently but the cooling system had not been flushed fully, and that was the reason for oil in the water.
The engine was re assembled and cooling system flushed, then the car was taken for a 30 mile test run, once again no problems where found apart from a small water leak.
The water leak seemed to be coming from the passenger side at the back of the engine, so the intake system was removed again as I suspected that a water pipe may have been damaged when moved to gain access to the oil cooler.
Even with the cooling system pressurised, I could not find the leak. As I wished to use the car the following day, I put it all back together and hoped for the best.
The next day all was fine for about 40 mile, then suddenly the EML (engine symbol) light flickered for about 30 seconds and then came on parentally . As I was on a motorway with the caravan on the back, I continued on until the services about another 10 mile then stopped. A quick inspection revealed nothing, so I started the engine again, No EML light. I spent about 10 mins playing with the revs of the engine and still no EML light came on. So off we set again, all was fine for about 10 mile, then on came the light again. As it was not having any effect on the cars running, and we had a caravan park to get to, I continued the journey of about another 100 mile.
The following day on starting the car, the light was off at first, then came on about 10 mile into the journey, and has remained on ever since.

To Day.
A new set of rocker cover gaskets arrived today so the engine has been striped down for a third time. 2 things have been found that I need advice on:

1. The sound proofing on the baulk head above the p/s head is very wet. Where could the water becoming from? Is it my water leak?

2. I found a 8/10mm pipe not connected to anything and can't see where it should go to. See pic. Seems to go down to the gear box. Could this pipe not being connected, be the cause of the EML light coming on? As all was fine with the EML light before I took the injetion system off, I'm thinking that it is something I have done.

Thanks for any help.
Chris.

Sodden foam won't help with misfire issues, especially 246. Can be removed without concern ;) this will also help rule it out.

Pipe is gearbox breather, and can essentially be ignored :y

Is it losing coolant?

Requires flushing 20-30 times to clear the system thoroughly following oil cooler failure.

Cool. did wonder if it was a breather pipe.

It is not really losing coolent, the header tank did drop a bit, (after 300 mile with caravan) but not enough for the light to come on. It just has a slow drip off the bottom p/s bell housing that seems to be running down the bell housing.

Going to carry on flushing system for a while yet, but would like to sort the EML light out and be able to use the car.

Use the pedal trick to read the codes which are causing the elm,,instructions in the guide's

The water could be the bolts and washers holding the bridge as they don't look very new if the oil cooler has been changed recently!

the drip could be the heater bypass valve

If the header tank level is going down then you are  losing  coolant

Unless it's droping significantly requiring topping up every journey, it could simply be not being bled properly after each coolant flush...

Ok, the system is self bleeding, but if you bleed it thoroughly,  ie start it up, cap off, heater temp set to high both sides and burp the top hose until the fan first kicks in, refit cap and allow the fan to kick in twice, top up header tank as required at this point, should only be 200ml or so ;)

I have found with my 2.6 that after coolant change, water pump change, heater matrix change etc. although I fill the system in garage and try to bleed it when engine idling (not very hot) I still have to add once e.g. that 200ml after first 10 km driving. Have you checked the cylinder head gaskets visually. I had problems with gasket in oil filter side, back corner, lower.

Agreed have had exact same with my 2.6 when first changing water pump & then again with HBV. Had to top up 200/250 ML on both occasions . But was fine then after  :y

Engine is now all back together.
Took her for a  20 mile run and all seems fine. No EML light or water drips.
Will keep a cheak on her over the next few days and see how she goes.

Just as well really, as I went to start my 2.5TD this morning and there was a big bang.... Aux belt tensioner in 3 peaces and 2 snaped belts. >:(
