Title: Power Steering failure
Post by: GrahamT on 06 January 2017, 14:33:26
Today the power steering on my 2001 2.5V6 estate gave up. It was working fine then slowed down to park the car. The steering shuddered a little then there was no power assistance.

The belt and pulleys are all intact, there are no leaks or damaged pipework and the fluid is clean and at the correct level. So I am assuming either the pump or steering box has failed in some way. Is this a common problem? Any advice before I try and find a new pump?

Thanks

Does it work with a few revs (eg, try in neutral)? If so, likely tired PAS pump.

No I should have stated that sorry. No amount of revs makes any difference at all.

Thanks

Checked fuse #14 ?

Can I ask why? This is a hydraulic system. Is there an electrical control on the v6 cars?

The servotronic system does give variable assist based on road speed. There is still some assistance if this fails, but steering is heavier than normal.

I've checked the fuse and it is fine. There is no assistance at all. At parking speeds it's a struggle to turn the wheel and I'm not a small guy.

OK. It's not electrical, then. The pump is probably the most likely candidate, as the boxes seem rarely to suffer any issues.

Anyone knows what happens if you pull servotronic unit out?  In case of a servotronic failure?

Is there a guide to changing this pump as according to the Haynes manual I need to discharge the air-con system.

Thanks

Once replaced don't worry about bleeding the system it does it itself, just turn full lock to lock (under load, with wheels on ground) a couple of times then check the fluid level...

Thanks. That part I'm happy with. I've just never taken one out of an omega V6.

Well it is out.

That was very easy. Just waiting for the new one to arrive now.

Thanks for your help

Don't forget to grease the bearings in the tensioner pulley while the belt is off.

The water pump and cam belt were only done a few weeks ago so they are fine.

Thanks

Think Nick means AUX belt tensioner

What colour is your PAS fluid because it tends to go very dark when the pump fails  ;)

Might be a idea to drain / refill the fluid  :y
