did you turn the ignition on when a seat was unplugged? Either that or the SRS on your new seat is goosed. It needs a TechII or similar to reset it when the fault is sorted

Did you turn the ignition on with the seat wiring disconnected?

Assuming that your new seats have the appropriate airbag wiring/components, you will need to have the warning light switched off with a suitable scantool - an OBD tool will not do this!

Look at that: almost word for word/ second for second :y

There's your problem. It's too late for you now, but the ignition doesn't need to be on to change the seats.

Answered in posts #2 and 3; you need a Tech II, or similar to reset the light.

My airbag light came on yesterday evening as I was driving. Can't do much until I get home in a week or so. Don't like driving with the red light on the dash as it catches your eye and I keep thinking 'oh shit what's that?' Apart from avoiding crashing is the car still safe to drive? I presume that the airbag system is just disabled. I have software on my laptop that should be able to  check for the fault and reset the ecu when I get back home.

Yes, "safe" to drive, but all SRS is disabled. So if you do have an accident, no airbags or pretensioners, so increased chances of serious injury or worse.
