HI, after having had vauxhall do a diagnostic and overall health check on my car, which actually came back as very good they have said its more than likely that the binnacle is knackered as I have intermittent fault on speedo. They priced a new one at £1500, err I can buy my car 3 times over for that, then they said they can repair it for £400. But thats still too much, however bba in Rochester will refurb it for me for 115, thats much better, the thing is I have to get it to them. Therefore I need to know how to remove it, please can I have guidance on this. Many thanks. Les

It'll be in the maintenance guide section somewhere. Steering wheel doesn't have to come off contrary to haynes book of lies.

1 screw at the bottom of binnacle which may need the plastic steering column shroud removed to access it. Another screw on the left hand end of the binnacle which is only accessible after you have remove the centre heating vents, which can be prised out using a butter knife or similar. Then remove the 2 screws which locate the body of the vent in place and pull the vent out.
Then draw the binnacle towards you until its released from its connector, pull it over towards the centre of the car and unplug the MID from the back, before manoeuvring it out. Takes about 5 minutes.
A second hand binnacle usually costs about £25, but of course the mileage wont be the same, but does that really matter on such an old, low value car ?

Agreed, just drop it down to the lowest position, remove the covers and use the shaft of the screwdriver to hold the filler piece down as you unscrew it ;)

hi, that is great news re getting it out, the thing is about getting a second hand one is that technically it has to be logged into the ecu etc, it must be from the same type / model of car etc, I believe there is more to it than simply slotting in a different second hand one. Also I agree it doesnt really matter re the value of the car but it would really annoy me knowing its not right, for a little over a oner im happy to get my one refurbed. Many thanks on procedure for getting it out. L

Could it not just be iffy contacts? The dash only makes contact as it's pushed into place :-\

Unless you have a very early Omega with a non-adjustable steering column. (I know because I had one)

You will need a replacement binnacle from a similar Omega, I think that means a V6 if you have a 2.6, and it may matter whether you have a manual or auto, someone will tell you. The plugs on the computer unit can vary too, the colour should define it. Take care releasing the locking lever holding the plug to the computer, some are plastic and can be broken. Release the binnacle from its surround, then pull the left hand end out so that you can see the plug clearly to unplug it.

Somebody is telling your porkies ..... it just needs to be a V6 speedo ie one that is marked up to 160mph

All V6 facelift (160mph, km in blue digits) ones are the same. No difference between auto / manual / 2.6 / 3.2 regardless of the P/N's, best to swap your MID over though.... and as for 'logged into the ecu' - nope.

If any V6 binnacle will do, I have a few here. They may need new some bulbs, always worth changing while it's out, but they all worked before I scrapped the parent cars (2.5s). If you like, I could check what colour the computer plugs are - I have a hunch some are yellow and some black, but could be wrong.

though I'm sure the wrong one would work enough to prove the point. I swapped over dash binnacles from a petrol & diseasal Astra to prove something .... the diseasal dash worked in the petrol enough to prove the diseasal speedo sender was fubar'd

94 and early 95 are different from later cars. They have different range for the fuel gauge. These early instruments are easy to identify as they have 5km intervalls on the speedo vs 10 on later cars. Also they have 250 rpm intervalls on rpm vs 500 on later models.

Fuel gauge is calibrated due to different shaped tanks... saloon tanks are an even depth whereas in estates the sender is effectively mounted below the top of the tank... ergo a saloon gauge in an estate will always under read, but vice versa and you run out of fuel at a 1/4 tank ::)

That's either some serious in-depth knowledge, or the result of a long walk with a petrol can!

It might be tother way around tbh, but gauge misreads enough to make a difference... Net result was a dead fuel pump and a tow home iirc... Had fuelled the car at first sign of missing, but clearly not soon enough ::)
Estates are fussy enough about fuel level without the added lottery ;)

There are differences. For example, there are something like 16 different versions for PFL. MFL and FL is much better, due to being programmable.
