Been using my iPhone to take pictures / videos quite a lot recently.
Got to the point that most of the 16 gig was used up.
The phone backs itself up onto iirc iCloud when plugged in, Wi-Fi enabled and not in use.
I've just been on icloud via the laptop and everything on the phone is there on the laptop screen so decided to delete stuff off the phone.
When deleting stuff, I'm given a message saying ............. This photo will be deleted from your iCloud Photo Library on all your devices.
Does all devices mean just my 2 iPhones or the phones and access via the laptop ??
Just to add
I've just gone into iCloud settings on the laptop and under My Devices, it shows my old iPhone 4s and the current phone.

Because this technical wizardry worries me regarding losing stuff, I just plug the phone charger usb lead in to my lap top and copy all of the photo's on to that. You then have the option of saving to disc in case the lap top implodes.
When it is plugged in to the lap top, I just open the file as if it's a memory card. That's not really what you wanted to do though is it, as you haven't got instant access to them. :-\
Can't help you with iCloud I'm afraid as although I have an iCloud account I'm afraid the workings of it are alien to me. :-\

That's the way I used to do it tbh :(
Just been back on to confirm it does get deleted across the board :(
You do get 40 days to re instate the stuff before it gets nuked permanently so i'll have a look through them over the weekend and decide what I want to keep and transfer it over the laptop hard drive somehow :y

You need to tell iCloud to manage the storage on your phone - this will mean it only stores local copies that will fit, anything else is stored on iCloud and downloaded when needed.
If you do what you suggest you are just deleting your photos - completely.

On the phone: (assuming iOS 10)
Settings > iCloud > Photos > change from 'Download and Keep Originals' to 'Optimise iPhone Storage'

FYI - Sync'd cloud storage (of any type) will remove files deleted on a device from all sync'd devices. That's the point really.
Most have options to remove from sync/cloud, but keep locally, as has been stated.
Unless the provider specifically states it and provides assurances, cloud storage should never be used as a sole backup, for obvious reasons.

For the price of a pint, you should have had one of these, 100gb OneDrive, does what it says on the tin.
Can source a few more of these Licences again, a bit cheaper this time as the Activation expires on the 31st Dec 2016, the Licence will last for 2 years once activated.
Your get an additional plus 100GB over your existing cloud storage allowance for the next 2 years, ie, if your existing allowance is 5GB your get 105GB.
Cost is £2.99 Each, these are genuine MS OneDrive Licences and are easily applied to your existing or a new OneDrive Account.
MS would normally charge you £2 per month for a 50gb 12 month Add On, so 100gb over a 2 year period is a massive deal over that period
PM me if your interested, these will be on a limited supply, so will be on a first come first served basis, the last batch went quickly so once there gone, there gone.
zirk. ;)
