Put the dog in the 4x4 this morning ready for our morning stroll, turned the key & zilch. Took the battery off which as far as I'm aware was the original from 2005!
Phoned my local motor parts shop (Linco) one in stock
RRP £141.90 trade £89.11+vat, all sorted within an hour well pleased.

Often quite a few breakers on the bay you might be able to source a cheap replacement some have done mega miles though, I've been pretty lucky with mine bought it from its first owner in 2012 with 25,000 miles on the clock, now just over 60,000 been a great workhorse brilliant for towing

This dam thing has the gearbox totally locked up (manual) so I am expecting a pretty major internal failure or multiple gears selecting.

Time for some percussive maintenance. With a lump hammer :y
My old man's subaru legacy tried that party trick once. Selected two gears simultaneously and wouldn't let go. Blocked both other cars on the driveway. I was not amused >:(
Recovery man came to drag it out the way, and in the process of jacking up each wheel to put low friction material under, it must have freed some pressure as when he got in it and instinctively went to knock it into nuetral it dropped the gears ::)
