Title: Outdoor Padlocks
Post by: EMD on 25 January 2017, 09:21:00
Having bought various outdoor padlocks they have all suffered the same fate . Seizing up and not being able to lock or unlock without a struggle . I have often lubed them to try and keep them from seizing but to no avail  ::) Any one know any make of lock that will last more than 12 months  :-\

I usually fill mine with silicone grease, none of them have seized yet - it's water insoluble so doesn't easily wash away.. or off your hands.. clothes..

I have a couple on the glider trailer that are branded "Master".

They have survived out on an exposed airfield for the circa 18 years that I've owned the aircraft and still work perfectly well. They weren't be any means new back then either. The chap who I bought from was in the security industry so clearly knew what to buy!

There are special types of all weather locks you can buy quite cheaply, you need to see if there is a litte hole in the bottom of the lock or not, if there is its OK to use outside, if it hasnt got the little hole then take your chance with it...

OR

It might be the other way round  ::)

What about Marine Padlocks

Plus the "Master" Brand that KW mentioned.

I think one padlock I've had for years is a Master, actually. So another vote for them.

The others (on the shed at the old house for a couple of years and gate at the new) are no-name eBay purchases of the 'disc shaped' variety, but seem to be doing OK out in all weathers.
