I'm toying with the idea of getting one of these, they are quite reasonably priced used, and I have just been quoted £550 to insure one.
Any advice on the model to go for. Luxury, Premium Luxury etc., and model year? I'm looking to spend up to £25k.
Any known issues with particular models? :y
PS My low mileage 3.2 Elite will then be surplus to requirements. :y

£25K is quite reasonably priced :D
-
Doctor Opti has one I think? XF-R with the Supercharged V8.
You want Portfolio Spec :y

I very much like mine. :y
If you want a 'woofly' V8 the choice will be between the 5.0 N/A or the supercharged 5.0 XFR
Early XFR's 2009/10 can be had for less than £20000.Probably best to go for the facelift model which arrived in 2011. This comes with 8 speeds instead of 6 and (I hate it) auto stop/start. :-\
£25000 will buy a very nice 2012 XFR.......or possibly 2013.
I pay £324 insurance and the trip computer is showing a 'Tunniesque' 22 MPG ::) over the last 2500 miles.
Do it.......you're a long time dead. :y

£550!! At your age?!! :o :o That's horrendous. :(
As with all modern cars there's a lot of silly things. Touch sensitive interior light for instance that becomes posessed. Replaced under warranty in mine by the dealer. Cost them ~£350.
Handbrake needs resetting via computer if you replace rear pads etc...
Typically Each step up will cost another £3-4k - Lux/Prem/Port.
Suspension is very firm compared to an Omega. Even worse on 20"s. Personally I find them quite boring and figedety to drive at less than 90mph.
The touchscreen control is slow and dim witted and everything is accessed through it.
6spd gearbox infinitely preferable to the shitty 8spd variant. Start stop cannot be permanently disabled in the ECU according to Jaguar tech and will reactivate every time you turn it on.
-
Most Jaguar dealers are now offering something called 3+ servicing for cars aged three years and older.
Cost..... £199 for minor service and £275 for a major service. Still more than enough but (if you follow the service manual) only due every 16000 miles.

True.......but soft in comparison to 'ze germans'.
I agree about the rear brake pads. Mine were changed at the first service at 16000 mile
Top two gears on the 8 speed ZF auto are there for reasons of economy and emissions. 8th gear gives almost 50 MPH per 1000 RPM so makes for relaxed and (relatively) economical progress on the motorway. Gearbox is very fast for an old fashioned torque converter unit.
Sluggish touch screen still not perfect but improved on the 2011 facelift.
Not perfect but in XFR guise a real drivers car. :y
-
Does this help, Mr Shackeng? The black paint does take some upkeep but looks good when just done.

This comes with 8 speeds instead of 6
Not to mention the early sat navs were so out of date they didn't show the M25 going all the way round ;).
We owned a 2004 x-type at one time and the early XF's share the same poxy excuse for a road atlas.

Yep...Mrs Opti briefly owner an X-Type Mondeo in 3.0 SE auto guise. A truly woeful car. :-\
-
Thanks very much for all the info guys. So preferably a Portfolio model, 2011 onwards, and learn to live with the 8 speed auto. I would much prefer a black one, but did browse this one: http://www.motorparks.co.uk/used-cars/jaguar/xf/petrol/automatic/jaguar-brentwood/?latitude=&longitude=&orderby=9&postcodeSB=SN1+5EU&hasmonthly=1&term=48&deposit=1000&annualmileage=10000 however, they want a deposit to bring it to their branch in Swindon, for a test drive, which I ain't doing, so I'll keep looking. :y
-
If they want to sell it, they might... no excuse if it's the same dealer group... :-\

Nope, not interested. Take it or leave it attitude. Having driven to North East London, 120 miles or so, once, many years ago to see a 4.2 XJ6, described as superb, and finding it was the opposite, I am leery at driving long distances to see used cars.:y

Yep....most dealers seem to come with an inbuilt 'f*ck you' attitude. :-\
Nice car but quite pricey for a 2011 N/A V8 in only premium luxury specification. Low mileage helps but.......
-
A budget of £25,000 you say. Black as well. :y

I like the XJ. Considerably more expensive than the XF year for year though.

Hmmm depends. I've been in a folding hard top 3 series with 20s that was much better. (possibly due to the fact they're heavy as frig). It's a recognised problem with the damper settings. Spires sell a revised tune damper and softer spring to improve the ride quality.
Try an F10 M5 / E63 AMG if you're considering the XFR.

Don't forget Lady Opti's Corsa! ;)
That's got to be over £1200 a year that our Lord Opti gives to that nice Mr Hammond each year for the pleasure of running such fine motor cars! :)

According to a couple of guys at work who run them, they are sadly not economical and only achieve mid 30's mpg in the real world.

I'd be happy at mid 30's given it's a 3.0 V6 and the size of the car. The 3.2 Omega can barely crack 22mpg on the run to work.

Economical - 'using no more of something than is necessary'
Hence not a car you buy for economy :y
So if you your requirements are 'economical' then its not on the list, if your requirements are bags of torque then yes it is. The key message is that the quoted figures are far from reality sadly. :y

True, the figures on paper are no way near what you get. I think FatherT's diesel on paper is 50mpg, but I think he gets around low 40's.
It's a compromise though? My current drive the VW CC is very good on fuel, winter use has taken a hit, but I'll average around 50mpg over the course of a tank, close to 60mpg in the summer. However it is manual and FWD...
I could get a Polo diesel and easily crack 60mpg, but if I want to waft around in a Luxo modern barge, then it's the XJ.
If I did get a petrol XJ of say 2013 vintage:
1) The VED on the V8 would be astronomical, £45 a month.
2) The insurance would be higher, compared to the diesel, given my age
3) Fuel use would be very high.
The XJ diesel is economical choice for that type of car, not necessarily an economical as a car could be. :)
For me the next house move would mean a longer commute, to get a bigger house/garden, means longer drives into work. At that point I'd only consider an Automatic due to the distance.

Yep, and anything in that age band with a bit of poke will be the same.
Then again, £45 a month sounds bad, but tot up what you're going to spend on fuel, insurance, tyres, servicing, repairs (especially if lorry fuel) and depreciation and I reckon it's in the "not that significant but a tad galling" category.
-
Meh. There's more to life than mpg. Especially when the cost of fuel has come back down from it's extortionate heights.

So is the cost of Diesel injectors, DPFs, tax for driving filthy diesels into london... owning a car is a mugs game. Might as well enjoy it. Just choose who you're going to pay your money to : BP / Taxman / Mechanic / Manufacturer / Motor factor. Sure as hell, one of them is going to get your money no matter what you buy ;)
