I have being looking at a couple of audi a3s age range between 2004 to 2006 it seems that you can only get the quattro in 3.2l version. It has to be auto. Anybody know if you can get the quattro in smaller engine also anything i should look out for. E.g gearbox suspension engine.

They have a problem with the head going porous audi will tell you its a cracked head had a couple in the garage with the same problem avoid :y

Isn't that only the 2.0 TDI disesal ones?

Digging around on the net & depending on the year it looks like :-
A3 2.0T & 1.9/2.0TDI 3d or 5d in Sport or S /Line :)

You can also get quattro/haldex with the 2.0 TFSI engine, but it's best avoided. Due to timingchain and carbon build up problems among other stuff. So I think that finding a well serviced 3.2 is the way to go.
Here is a couple of (more reliable) alternatives:
Volvo S40/V50 T5 AWD (230hp auto)
SAAB 9-3 2.0T XWD (bit newer though)
Alfa Romeo 159 3.2 AWD (no I'm not having a laugh :D it is based on the same platform as Veccy C/9-3 and the V6 is GM derived)

3.2 can suffer stretchy timing chains. I was looking at one in a Passat estate.
The chain is on the back of the engine making it an engine and box out job, Time card is 20+ hrs of labour and VW/audi were asking in excess of £4k to get the job done.
Personally, I wouldn't touch one with someone else's :o

That problem is related to the Audi A6 3.2, not the 3.2 VR6 in the smaller A3/Golf/Leon/Octavia platform. As far as i know.
The chain is on the back of the engine making it an engine and box out job, Time card is 20+ hrs of labour and VW/audi were asking in excess of £4k to get the job done.
Personally, I wouldn't touch one with someone else's :o

I've got a 17 year old A3 parked outside,done 210k miles and everything on it still works,its not even had a clutch replaced yet :y

I've got a 17 year old A3 parked outside,done 210k miles and everything on it still works,its not even had a clutch replaced yet :y
But that probably has the 1.9 PD or the 1.6 slug petrol in it :y

I saw a photo of that engine's cam chain setup. It was enough to know I never wanted to have one in my life. I have no idea what problem the Germans thought they were solving when they created that. ;D

Possibly the same team that designed the chain setup on the 2.0 diesel BMW.....

Their stated reason* is that the chain is a non-serviced item so they put it at the back to give more space at the front to work on the engine.

I could add the receipt for my next door neighbours A5 boot latch but yeah... moot point in the greater scheme of VAG corrupt nazi shittiness. ;)

When you look at the simplicity of the Omega's cam belt (which does the same thing) how can anyone design a carbuncle like that and be proud of it. ::)

Bad example... 40k is a truly pathetic service interval... but yeah... why on earth would you use 20 times as much material thus risking a premature failure before 40k ;D

Indeed. The service interval didn't work out great for the GM engine in the end, but it is also nearly a 30 year old design. I know what I'd rather have.
EDIT: 40K miles is a tad better than 31 days, too. ::)
