Title: You're having a Giraffe!
Post by: Viral_Jim on 23 February 2017, 17:11:13
New cat-back sections are on the list for the desmond (slight blowing and looking underneath, there are half a dozen spots on the way out), had a ring round and my local places want no less than £380 to do the work  :o.

Now I realise that everyone has to make a living, workshop costs etc etc. But the parts are available online with a 2yr warranty for under £100 so I would have thought it would be a similar cast for trade (at most). Even allowing £150 for the kit, I've yet to see an exhaust change take an hour, even allowing for two, that's still charging the sunny side of £110/hr  :o. Even my BMW main stealer doesn't have the balls to try and charge that much!

Methinks they either don't want the work or are out for a scalp.

I really didn't want to DIY this as I don't have a lift or a pit, but for over £300, I'd best get my a$$ on the driveway.

Them's the beggers! I've been trying to think who they were for a good hour. I did the front section about 9 months ago as the flexi was knacked. Time to place an order I think

I done a diy centre/backbox on SWMBO Zaffy took me a little over 2 hours on the driveway and not blowing my own trumpet but i only have use of one hand and half arm long as you have strength and abit of heat (blowtorch for me) it can be done  :y

I should be fine, I did the front section less than a yr ago so that joint should come apart just fine. For the rest I may just cut the rubber hangers  ;D

Call me paranoid, but I don't like using heat under a car on the drive. A guy I knew from school died that way in his 20's. Admittedly that was welding, he did a Niki Lauda, to put it  euphemistically.   :'(

Just fit a 2.0 system with one centre box, easier to fit & cheaper :y

Interesting!

So the 2.0 system fits onto the 2.2 cat pipe (one with the flexor section on it)?

Thanks,

Reading the thread you linked, a user called Glynn confirmed it worked fine on his 2.2 FL estate.

Good enough for me  :y

I was going to fit a 2.0 exhaust on my Desmond, but when i looked into prices a bit further i found that i could get a two centre pipe version for very little extra so went that way.

Yes I took that route too & what a job  ;D I was on my own with just ramps  :(

Lying in the dirt & heaving around those heavy Polish double skinned boxes  ::)

If you get the angles wrong the pair of pipes refuse to line up correctly for the rear box
My  JR terrior even crawled under & growled at those Polish gremlins  ;D

The air tuned blue as the light faded, never again  :P
