Title: oil changes
Post by: raywilb on 15 March 2017, 14:43:40
when doing an oil change on a driveway unless one has a suitable container that will hold more than 5ltrs then oil spillage is a norm. I thought  will but a 8ltr container from ECP but those too are no good as the well fills up faster than the drain hole will cope. I now have a pump from lidl & have used it on a few motors. ( do it when oil is hot to speed process up ) I suck out approx. 2ltrs then let the rest out through the sump.  Lidl have them on sale again very shortly .  :)

I've got a tray thing, with spout I bought from Machine Mart years ago, holds 10L, it's also quite low so car can be lowered fully and still drain ok

I have one similar(bought from Machine Mart I think), and there are three bungs in it: the drain hole in the well, a large one on the neck to empty the contents, and a small one near the well. If I don't remove the small one, the well overflows as air inside the container has nowhere to go. I like this style of drain pan because I can just replace the bungs, and empty the pan at the local transfer station when it is convenient, without having to pour the oil into another container first.

Sucking some of the oil is just another way of complicating a simple job.

I use a large flat seed tray - WITHOUT holes in the bottom! Low profile, large capacity and cheap..... ;D

I have what tunnie uses. Ideal for the task and less messy than the type the OP mentioned.

With this type, if you manage to spill any, perhaps you should pay someone else ;D

I've got a man. I find these are the best for changing the oil without leaving a mess on your drive.

I have what tunnster has got.

Few years ago though I purchased one from hell frauds not knowin wtf I was doing.... it was completely inadequate for the job. It was a rectangular container but the area it gathered on top was about 3mm deep. First ever oil change. BOOM. Everywhere as the shite catch area overflowed instantly. Not a happy Halfords customer I can tell thee!

You're not telling me that at least 4 or 5 out of ten don't pour it down the drain. Of course they do.

i use a 12v pump and get it all out with that. takes a little longer getting the tube at the right height.  sometimes i take off the sump drain plug to check but everytime so far nothing comes out.
