Title: Cooling Fans x2 on 3.2
Post by: Lizzie Zoom on 20 March 2017, 19:46:21
Since I have got my car back from the body shop the two fans seem not to work when the engine temperature becomes high (90 degrees).

In the crash one of the fans was damaged, so two replacement fans were installed.

What I want to check on is what fuses / relays could have blown please?

No 4 fuse is one of the 15A fuses shown in the manual as being for the cooling fan, but this position is empty with no electrical socket to take a fuse. The other fuses shown as covering a "cooling fan" are intact.

Any ideas please on what to look for to resolve?

The body shop will be looking into the problem tomorrow but I would sooner sort it before then.

Thanks. :-*

Cut loom, crushed or seized fans, especially if second hand...

Fuse/relays in engine bay fuse box, expect one or tother to have blown if fans were running when impacted.

Many thanks Doctor Gollum :y :y

I was wondering if the engine bay fuse box contained any fuse / relay that related to the fans; you have answered that and now I know where to look :-* :-*

The loom is intact but the fans were running when I hit the van; the filler pipe for the windscreen/headlight  washer bottle was bent into the fan and took some blades out before it got stuck. So the fuses/relays are my prime target for a resolution 8)

This guide How to test the fans (http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=133825.0) might help with diagnosis.

They do seize up nicely with a lack of use too, so don't rule that out... It's the three green relays iirc plus one of the primary fuses.

Bear in mind that, unless you have the climate in ECO mode, the front two should run at low speed all the time. They stop if the A/C system needs gas, so is it possible that the A/C system was damaged in the crash and hasn't been recharged / repaired?

Failing that (or in ECO mode), they should start running at low speed, along with the third fan behind the radiator, just above mid point on the temperature gauge. They step up to high speed with a further rise in temperature, but that's a rare occurrence, especially this time of year!

On mine if i leave it idling from cold no fans are running at all(ac doesnt work )then as it warms up and gets to just above 90 both fans come on (seem fast) then temp drops to 85 or a bit above and fans stop.no real issues when driving.idoes this mean mine has a fault and if so where or is it just because the aircon doeasnt work ?        Sorry lizzie if ive hyjacked your thread ! My apologies

Front fans are both aircon and temperature switched. Main fan temperature switched only. Whole system is self contained with the two radiator thermoswitches and three relays. Climate control is effectively an external bypass switch :y

So because all mine come on at once when temp gets above 90 is that correct considering aircon doesnt work or is there a fault as well. Thanks

There's a guide for testing them.

No problem! :y :y

Due to the info given to me in this thread I soon discovered it WAS a fuse that had blown; the 30A one under the bonnet in the large fuse/relay unit next to the battery. All fans now working fine. 8)

Thanks all :-* :-* :y
