Personally I'd go for the nice red XJS. :y

"This Allegro is the best foreign car I've owned".
This from a French man.
Enough said really ::)
-
And yes opti that jaaaaag looks great. Bunny girl an optional extra? :-\
-
I always fancied the Rover. Never came close to owning one. But all cars from that era were rustbuckets.
-
My Morris Marina 1800TC Coupe finished in mustard with a black go faster stripe down the bonnet will always be in my top 10 of best cars I've owned! :y
-
Of those,I've owned a mini[but not the clubman]and had 2 SD1's a series 1 3500 with manual box and a series 2 2L also with manual box.Rusty?Yes and with dodgy electrics!,but I'd have another-early V8S or later Vitesse :y Liked the Princess when it came out as it was different to the 3 box shape everyone else was moving to,never owned one but did later own an Ambassador which was actually a pretty good car and comfy too.
-
I note that the pompous customer talked about reclining seats as though they were a luxury item.
I suppose in 1975 a radio was an optional extra unless you bought a Datsun.

So would I, always like em....but would convert the headlights to double spots :)
I once owned a SD1......didn't take me long to trash the engine ;D :D
Bought a VX Viceroy after that :y
-
Mmm Rover SD1 3500, my dream car :)
I'd love an Allegro too

I owned (was given free of charge) a 1981 Princess 1700. Actually not a bad car that handled well and proved to be very spacious.
I had a problem with something called 'displacers' ??? which were part of the hydragas (I think) suspension.

No.. i love odd cars :D

At that time we had Ford Company cars and I regularly thanked God that my Company never wanted to touch BL cars. To me as a twenty year old they were a joke and were for "old people" ::) ::) ;D ;D ;D

How about the much sought after All-aggro Vanden Plas? ;)
-
I like that too, but my favourite is the 1750 HL
-
Montego MG turbo would have been the one for me. But I wasn't old enough to drive then, unlike you old farts. ;D
-
Love it!
Brother had a later V12 XJS-super car!
I bought a 3500SD1 manual-not a patch performance wise compared to my previous P6 3500S.
Cousin bought a Belgium built Allegro 1750HLS in about 1981-it was two years old. Within a year the engine mounting bolts were pulling through the very rusty chassis.

Introduced about a decade later. Same time as Maestro Turbo.

Dolly Sprint :y Went through a brick wall as a passenger in Allegro :( ::) It did drive home though :D

They're very disappointing; cramped, uncomfortable, expensive and slow, which is just as well considering that the brakes are unbelievably poor.
The first time I ended upside down in a field was courtesy of an Allegro. And some very bad driving by a friend ::)

The second time I ran out of (very slippery) road before getting the car back under control. It wasn't even very fast, just a very deep ditch :-\

Ah, memories (Allegro, first car: 1978 1100S).
I'd still buy the XJS, though. Loved them as a kid, still love them now.. difficulty is finding one that isn't comprised mostly of bodges and filler to hide the rust holes!

I disliked the XJS in period as the svelte and sexy E-Type was a hard act to follow. I would like one now though and prices have been rising for some time.

Stop it! We've seen first hand what old jags are like, remember?
Still I still reckon the XJ40 fastback was a work of genius. Would love one of those if we can find a way to stop the fuel tank smouldering. ;D
-
;D ;D To be fair to it, it wasn't smouldering until someone (whose initials might be KW) carved their initials into the rear wing with a plasma cutter :P ;D
But all the rust on that car is what would put me off buying even an "immaculate" XJS these days.. I mean, I am getting handier with a welder but not that handy!

I quite fancy an XJS Lynx Eventer. Less than 100 manufactured, apparently.

No. Just no.
-
Wolseley Saloon , i remember being took out in one and shown how to handbrake turn ;D Still like the P6 but think i would take the 2.2 rather than V8 as only driving sedately these days ::)
-

Less bits to rust without the butresses... every cloud and all that :D

If it'd be anything like my XJ40 it's more the firewall falling out you want to worry about (and the floors) ;D only thing holding it in was the pedal box and dashboard!

That's not rust, That's British character.
-
;D ;D Well, it did seem to come pre-installed in most British cars of the era, so maybe you're on to something there..
-
Of course none of this built in rust would have had anything to do with alternating strike days throught the seventies...
Coal dug on Monday would sit outside until loading on Wednesday. It would then sit on the train for three days because no one could drive it. Then, after the weekend, it would finally get delivered the following Wednesday.
Same story with the iron. And then the steel. And then the panels... you can see where I am going with this ::)
I suspect that you could strain tea through the panel surfaces prior to actually welding them together :D
-

The same thing applies to European, Japanese and American cars. Everything rusted badly, although some hid it better.

You are so right on that one. The early Datson's were infamous for rust quickly appearing. It was stated not long after these problems became apparent, and I am not really sure how true it was, but the reason why these early Japaneses cars rusted so badly was they did not enjoy the benefits of good European rust proofing of the chassis due to them only being built for the Japanese climate. ;)

You mean the Japanese climate with four defined seasons ::)

They don't, or didn't, use salt on the roads in winter, so less corrosive environment. So says the hearsay anyway.

My Grandad bought a Datsun 120Y 8) back in the 1970's. Within 18 months the tops of the front wings had rusted through. He got a replacement set under warranty and within 18 months... etc.
Saw quite a few pristine ones driving around in South Africa while I was over there. Clearly they lasted better in their climate.
-
My dad owned a wolsley 2200 6 cylinder in Mustard :y
The gear selector was mounted sticking out the right hand side of the dashboard
The car he traded-in was a white 1300 Marina, he waited till the summer to do the deal.
The hot summer of `76 dried the marina out nicely inside :D

I noticed that. Probably an advert from 1976 with the tax running until 1977.

Having known many, many people who worked at the factory that now produces the BMW Mini, it's not hard to see why British cars of the 70s and early 80s were utter shite - despite a usually good initial design.
The whole attitude was wrong, and the management did buggerall to weed it out. The phrase that Clarkson uses for BL workers, "that'll do", is far too kind. Damaged panels would go on. Panel fitting was rushed and often ill fitting. Corners cut. Terrible.
Fortunately, Austin Rover then teamed up with Honda, and there was a big change in attitude, and that showed in the cars that started to come out, such as the R7 Rover 200/400 series. Sadly, come the early 90s, BMW bought what was then Rover, and never invested in anything (BMW wanted BL's mass manufacturing techniques and 4x4 technology, not a car manufacturer). Then some of the original Austin Rover management bought Rover Cars from BMW for a quid, and that ended as expected, as the old mentality came back.

I believe Longbridge is a retail park and housing estate these days? ??? :(

You make that sound like a bad thing...

Selling over-priced tat to an unsuspecting public....
Until they knocked it down and built some shops :-*

Had a 1980 V reg Marina 1.7 estate, replaced a MK3 Cortina 2000E estate the Ford is probably the worst car I have ever owned, rusted rapidly & filled up with water every time it rained. The Marina was actually very reliable swopped it for a LWB Nissan Patrol when we moved to Norfolk.
-
No accounting for taste ;D
-
See? That's 2 of us on this thread that liked our Marinas! :y

Hard to imagine any girlies of the time getting excited by a Marina TC. I suppose you told them it had the same engine as the MGB. :y
That might possibly have worked.
........Oooooh Sharon, I hear that Tigger fella owns a yellow Marina with twin carbs. My knickers have suddenly become all damp. :D ;D

My Marina got quite damp due to a nurse I was "helping out" at the time, very supple young lady. 😋😋😋

:o :o :o Opti!!
But seriously when I saw a Marina I did wet my knickers..............after laughing so much at such an unfashionable car! ;D ;D ;D
I wouldn't, and still wouldn't be seen in one. At 19 they were such a joke belonging to "old" people. Now at xx I just wouldn't feel safe! :D :D ;)

Anyone owned a TR7 on here ? Interested to hear of your views on it ;)

Not owned a TR7, Mr EMD. But always lusted after a TR6.
TR7 was a hairdressers car.......and not a proper TR.

Don't waste your money my mate had one 3 years ago looked lovely but not a lot of grunt, now has a V8 BGT sounds great but oh so slow.
-
Never owned a TR7 nor fancied one.The MGB even in V8 flavour never appealed either. However a Stag could be a machine of interest!

I was 19 and had a lot of fun in my Marina. The girlies never seemed shy at climbing in with me! 8) :y

Sorry never owned a TR7. Owned TR2, TR3a, TR4, TR6 and still got a TR4A. Having driven a few TR7s, they cannot be considered a proper TR - no poke in comparison, considered a "hairdressers car". They also rot like b*ggery.

There was only one car worth buying in the mid/late '70s...
This... (http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C811495)
Only car I regret not buying when the opportunity presented itself in 1996 ::) albeit not this exact car...

Agreed, personal preference is dark metallic blue or gunmetal with biscuit or cream leather 8)
That said it wouldn't be a seventies thread without some Havana Brown and Russet :D

Nice.....but the 'cold war' 300 SEL 6.3 was faster and had more East German spy appeal. :y

Yup, definitely the combo that's aged the best. I'm also a fan of the metallic reds of the time and that "sky" blue that I've seen on a couple. Cars these days do all seem to be 50 shades of dull.
