Had a drive in the 16 plate TitaniumX Mondeo auto Estate today. Very impressed. Looking forward to picking it up on Thursday. ::)
-
Just to get it all out of the way:
- fords are cr@p
- the auto box will break within 500 miles
- it won't be as comfortable as an omega
- such a waste of money
In all seriousness though, great choice! 8) I like them very much and they definitely made my shortlist when looking for my next car.
-
Nice one, which engine?
-
240 ps petrol.

Good choice! :y

Good choice. Suggest you join Talk Ford forum at some point & get upto speed on Powershift auto gearbox oil changes. Seems they must be done regularly - ISTR 35k or 3 years.
Also, Google search for "Ford ETIS", if you then select Vehicle from the top menu it lets you enter a reg #, will give you build date, other vehicle data and a full listing of what it was built with :y
-
Good choice...titanium X as well, so fully loaded :y
I like mine, best drive Ive had in a while :)
Altho on mine the heated front screen has packed up....internet searches suggest its a bad earth above the interior light, as its two heating elements apparently and on different circuits....so unlikely to be a feed to the screen :-\
The stop/start seems to have decided not to work either....but that maybe the bits of card I have shoved in the seatbelt holder have moved and not fooling it I have my seatbelt on.....plus I rarely sit still and don't have it first gear with my foot on the clutch ( another reason it wont work) .....

The stop start won't work for a number of reasons - but the one that gets me is a minimum 75% battery charge. Mine then starts to work after a decent run but stops after a few days of running around locally.

...... the bits of card I have shoved in the seatbelt holder have moved and not fooling it I have my seatbelt on.....
Why on earth would you not wear a seat belt? :o :-\ ::)

Since it's a dual clutch job it needs it, like the VAG DSG. But the ZF/Ford box is more reliable and smoother :y
-
Hope it serves you as well as the old TD Shack :y

Been in a fair few Mondeos albeit for a couple of minutes at a time but they do seem nice cars that have improved greatly over the various series. Is it the very latest shape or the previous one?

I passed my test in 1988, so the seat belt laws had already been in force for 5 years at that point. ;)
Not sure why being a cabbie excuses you from wearing one to be honest, but it's your life! ::) :)

16 plate will be latest/current version .....

Thks Jaime, I shall be really sorry to see the old girl go, but as said, I really don't want to spend time under cars any more. :y

Correct, this one has 4700 miles on it, so hopefully enough to iron out the bugs. :y

The sane choice. :y

The law doesn`t

The early mundanos were pretty rubbish TBH. But from mid 2000s they became much, much better. And the current style one is a pleasant, if not entirely expiring, drive.
If the golf bats fit, and room in the back for his Golf buddies, I'm sure it will serve Shack well :). Going by those at work who have had them, you do get a few niggles with some of the technology stuff, but Ford do not have exclusivity on that...

I must admit, I have no great hope that all the technology, of which there is plenty, will be utterly fault free, but certainly better than the first Austin A90 (in the country) that my dealer step -dad brought home. Electric hood, windows etc., all failed within 6 months. A step too far, yet pioneering in its way. :y
-
I really like the look of the latest Mondeo's, good luck with it.

Sorry Dave, but that's oppsing retarded...
You're one serious prang away from an airbag tearing your head off :o
-
Without going into preach mode, I speak from experience in that, seatbelts are worth their weight in gold :y
-
Tbh, I couldn't give a rats arse about the wearing of a belt or not, but putting one if those blanks in the receiver might turn the stupid bong off, but it also makes the car think that the belt is fastened and activates all the protection.
Ergo have any prang of substance will trigger the full fury of the restraint mechanisms on an unrestrained body. Only one outcome of that scenario.
Either wear the belt as designed or tolerate the bong and don't wear it.
Cannot stress enough that there is NO middle ground.

I do wear my belt now, but never did, right up to the night the law required me to do so.
Not sure I'd agree with the airbag tearing your head off, as I'm sure that full sized airbags were intended for use with out the use of an additional belt ...... not all States required a belt. .... & we got the same sized airbags
-
Point is Andy, if the car thinks the belt is plugged in it WILL fire the airbags etc.
Unplugged and it won't/shouldn't ergo no airbag decapitation.
What Dave is saying is that he uses a dummy buckle to silence the warning; it serves no other function; as far as the car is concerned, the driver is wearing a seat belt and will fire the airbags etc as designed.

this is dangleberries and DANGEROUS advice
the airbags will deploy even if you have no seatbelt on. this is a good thing, you will at least get some protection (though not wearing a seat belt is a bad thing, of course). this is why in the passenger seat you have to MANUALLY DEACTIVATE the air bag if you fit a baby seat.
its dangerous advice because simply not plugging in a seat belt will NOT de-activate the airbag, DO NOT rely on that not to trigger the air bags and decapitate your baby.
similarly when working near any of the airbags including side ones DO NOT take doctor gollums advice and think that because the seat belt is not plugged in you are safe from airbag detonation. you are not.
similarly no objects must be placed in the area in which the airbags inflate, as they could cause injury when the airbags are triggered. DO NOT rely on doctor gollums advice and think that because the seat belt is not plugged in you are safe from airbag detonation. you are not.
having said all that some omegas are fitted with "seat occupancy recognition". this is NOT based on whether the seat belt is plugged in, or whether a dummy buckle is plugged in. it is based on a seat weigth sensor. from the manual
The seat occupancy
recognition system deactivates the
passenger front and side airbags if the
passenger seat is unoccupied or a
Vauxhall child restraint system with
transponders has been fitted to the
passenger seat.
vehicles with seat occupancy
recognition can be identified by the sticker
on the front passenger’s seat.

We're talking about a newer Mondeo ::)
Have crashed a Vectra C hard enough to destroy the front of the car and hole the engine. I wasn't wearing my seatbelt, or using a dummy plug, and the airbag didn't deploy. Can't speak for what might have happened had I been wearing my seatbelt.
-
There's going to be different points of view on this subject, but why the hell would you put the lives of yourself and/or your nearest and dearest at risk by failing to take every safety precaution available when driving your car?
It should be second nature to put on your seatbelt as soon as you get in the car and if I got into a cab where the driver wasn't using one I'd ask him to put it on. If he refused I would get out of the car and ring his office to tell them exactly why I wouldn't be using them again.
-
I understand why taxi drivers, and private hire drivers (when carrying passengers), are exempt, but unless you're constantly picking up complete Lady bitss from shithole dens and bars (apologies, but there is no other way to describe some of drugged up scum I have encountered) then it's generally better to wear your belt... especially if you're predominantly doing motorway work ;)
See tother thread if you need any further clarification.

I don't believe ANY make of car would disable the air bags just because you were stupid enough not to plug in your seat belt. no one would design a car like that unless they were thinking darwin awards - e.g. "you're too stupid to wear your seatbelt so we'll make sure you die by switching off the air bags as well". ;D

The Mondeo is a good chassis and drive, beware the 19 inch alloys as they give it a rather hard ride.
Engines are pretty run of the mill but generally reliable, only real issue is they don't tend to age well but, a bit of care should see it through.

Is it correct that the Power-Shift auto boxes need an oil change/service every 35k? or 3 years? :-\

There not as robust as a normal gearbox and very much the same as a DSG in terms of approach, the ones on the bigger cars are a wet clutch so fairly regular oil changes is a good thing to consider.
That said, there has been enough issues to result in a small recall in Asia and a class action law suit in the US.

Thanks, so on 2.0 petrol S-Max, it's worth ensure regular oil changes in the paperwork :)

My personal advise would be avoid any double clutch gearbox unless its going to be long journeys or very light use as they are an item that is either reliable (if maintained) or bite you hard on the arse!

It would be heavy on town use, occasional long trips.
Assume Zaf Tourer is not double clutch?
-
Obviously depends on the age of the zaf, but recent ones use an Asian Warner 6 speed jobbie. Not dual clutch, trad slush-matic :y

Please note that the Smax (and Mondeo with the 200ps) 2.2 TDCi engine has a conventional AW auto box and not the dual clutch unit.

I have been told[although I've never measured]that the latest version can't hold as much as the previous shape due to the sloppier rear roofline and tailgate. If so I think it a case of form over function much like a lot of new cars.Expect it to have the usual recalls and updates[which should be free]again this is not specific to the Mondeo, new cars in general seem to go through this.I think they are a really nice looking car and I'm sure it'll serve you well.

Made sure it doesn't have them, but it does have 18's which I hope to downsize ASAP. :y I should mention that it is a faster black model. ::)

I've seen it says Powershift on the shifter stick. :-\

Humm looking at this one it does not say power-shift, so must be a normal box. :)

Looks a nice car tunnie. Lots of space in the boot. Are the rear seats comfy for an adult on longish journeys? So many we have looked at seem to be designed for two adults in front and kids in the back.
Bit worrying this talk about dual clutches. :o That is putting a damper on my two current hot favourites ( Passat and Mondeo estates)

Never paid enough interest in S-Max to care, but don't assume anything when it comes to things like that, always check :y

Are the rear seats comfy for an adult on longish journeys?
I was surprised how comfortable the dinky seats in the Zafira-A were, when I was put in the back a month or so ago. Granted, only a short journey.
Both my 80yr old Mum and "middle age" Mrs TB (:P) have done 90min+ stints in them and both said they were comfortable :)
-
Ah, ignore last, you're talking tradional rear seats, not the back row on 7 seaters. Soz.
-
Quite pleased to find that Ford have added a gas strut to the bonnet on this Mondeo, only one, but its a start. I've come across another nice touch, driver's mirror dips on reversing, useful, it should be both sides. :( Still the camera is very good. :y
-
How are you finding the keyless entry?

Try sliding the mirror adjustment switch from driver mirror to passenger mirror. When mine is set to 'drivers mirror' the passenger mirror dips and vice versa.
Mine is not a Mondeo but it's worth trying on yours if you have memory function. :y

Picky. I have to say that it's joint equal first with heated seats on my goodies list on a car, love it/them :y

I like everything so far, including keyless entry. Still learning about the incredible technology. :y

Don't know if it's standard fit on TitaniumX[or others in the range]or whether it's an option, but I have seen one with park assist including bay parking where the car will maneouver itself into a parking bay within the painted lines.Does yours have this?

Yes, park assist, lane assist, traffic distance keeping and Active City stop. Haven't tried anything yet, spent today changing the TD ATF prior to sale :y

be careful where you leave your keys, criminal types use scanners to pick up codes and drive off in your nice new motor.
mate had his Nissan xtrail taken that way.
