Had a letter today from DVLA advising that my licence would soon expire.
10 mins of on-line time later & I've renewed it. Payment was £14 and they take the picture for the new licence from passport records. I was quite impressed actually - an example of "joined up government" in practice.

Yep good system, fake your picture on your Passport and all your other important Documents get updated. ;D

Got to agree they seem to have got their act together, took the private plate off the other halfs car on line received the retention certificate within 48 hours , transferred on to her replacement vehicle on line so easy & no travelling to vehicle licensing offices anymore, downside plenty of job losses !

Yep, all done on the C'pter now :D :D :D
The 21st century is going to be a fascinating time with technology making a very big impact on everything we do. We have seen nothing yet! 8) 8) 8)

Job losses yes, but every industry is subject to its market and this just shows that Civil Servants aren't immune too. Yes, I know they are people with families etc, but generally Govt employees have had it good for a long time.

According to a 2014 FOI request(https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/397430/FOIR4341_How_many_people_hold_licences_in_the_UK.pdf), there are 45.5 million driving licenses in the UK. If they all need renewing every 10 years that's £637 million every 10 years, or £63.7 million per year.
Thankfully they all don't need renewing every 10 years. I've had the same paper one since 1987. I salute all the muppets who think a £14 tax for doing nothing is good value.

Not far behind you. I've had my parchment licence since 1993 :y

I suspect, being the civil service, it costs them far more than £14 to do it, thus we are all taxed on it

It would be interesting to know how many licenses are 'renewed' because of change of address or name, versus just reaching the 10 year limit. A charge for the first two catagories can be justified, but for the last group it all just smacks of a non-job job creation scheme for which those that reach the 10 year limit have to pay £14 for the dubious privelidge of having a licence with a different photo on it.
Or put another way, what advantages do the new plastic credit card licenses have over the old paper only ones? And yet people are pleased that it runs efficiently and 'only' costs £14!

Actually, if you move then it's free :y

I suppose you could argue that as we age then a picture that is upto 10 years old might not be a good likeness .........

There is no picture on the old paper only licence and they potentially last you from 17 till 65 or later. So what, exactly, is the requirement to have one on a plastic photocard?
AS I said, half arsed job creation scheme.

Same paper jobbie here since 1978 when passed test.Really get annoyed when get told its not proof of ID and I should buy a " proper" photo licence.....no time soon >:(

So we have DVLA writing to (roughly) 4.55 million people per year saying their driving licence is about to expire. 2nd Class post is what - 55p? Lets assume they get a 50% discount for bulk postage. Plus a bit of admin, an A4 piece of paper and an envelope. Say 30p all in. Times 4.55 million letters is £1.4 million per year.
Then we have 2 million people (according to the BBC as of 2013) either knowingly or unknowingly driving on expired licences. Next step is obviously to start issuing 3pts and £100 fixed penalty fines to these people - much like the requirement for continuous registration or SORN of cars. 2 million x £100 = £200 million, A nice little earner.
It's madness.

Well, presumably, given its a piece of thin card with some type on it, I could knock one up on a printer, with any details I chose and then claim their ID as my own. Hardly seems the most secure system?
At least the card ones are somewhat harder to knock out fakes with.

Yes, just over 4 years out of date. Do you have any newer data that shows things are getting better? Or perhaps there are now 4 million people driving on expired licenses, so £400 million potential tax revenue up for grabs.
