Title: World's top health care systems
Post by: Rods2 on 20 May 2017, 14:02:49
A US group based at the University of Washington has done a global survey of 195 countries health systems and ranked them. Needless to say, the UK NHS fared badly against many other countries systems and the US even worse.

1 Andorra
2 Iceland
6 Australia
7 Finland
8 Spain
9 Netherlands
10 Luxembourg
11 Japan
15 France
30 UK
35 USA

With the exception of Australia, all of the top 10 countries were European!

What is the funding system for the good ones ? That's the important thing.

Over the years I've had reason to visit quite a few hospitals in various European countries, not as a patient. I'm not sure it's about the amount of funding, but possibly the manner of funding.

Two things that stand out is that waiting rooms are not crammed with people with stupidly minor ailments, and I was never aware of patients not keeping appointments.

I can recall an instance not so long ago in a major teaching hospital, I had arranged training on some equipment. This training required patients to be present. The people involved were me, a consultant surgeon, one senior nurse and one nursing assistant. Plus many products had been opened and prepared ready for use. A NHS consultant is paid between £75k and £130k. Not one patient out of five turned up, and only one called beforehand to cancel. We spent the morning yacking and drinking tea. The opened products were thrown in the bin as they were no longer sterile. I haven't worked it out but that afternoon cost thousands, with zero patient benefit. This story is not at all unusual. As it is perceived as "free", the NHS is appallingly abused and it's the people who really do need it that suffer.

There is a danger of comparing apples and pears. For example some countries the family are expected to feed the patient and sort out some laundry. Span has long waiting lists and good and not so good aspects. We never have a problem seeing a GP. A few times we have made an appointment around midnight and been in doctors before ten a.m. Your records are online and viewable anywhere in the province however if you move provinces you are in effect a new customer.

That saga of missed appointments is a disgrace. With a major leap in charges and reminder calls/ email alerts it should be easier to combat.

Also I think pharmacists play a big part. In other European countries (notably Germany and France from my experience) they are held in much higher regard than in the uk and you are very likely to catch a bollocking from the GP if you turn up with an ailment that the pharmacist could have sorted.

This frees up the GPs and as a knock on, the hospitals.

I'm sure that relevant managers at this hospital are sure that they did the right thing. I know this hospital, there is loads of parking space but it still gets packed and can get can be abysmal. But really, suing a senior member of staff, nuts. And confirms my belief that one the biggest problems with the NHS is crap overpaid managers most of whom wouldn't cut it in the real commercial world.

Funny how all the noisy socialists want the railways and utilities to be run like they are in other European countries, but they don't want the NHS to be run like other European countries run their health services.  ::)

Thus illustrating the utter stupidity of the Unions... ;D

I wonder if the JR have the same policy as the GWH in Swindon.
That is if the see an empty taxi parked on double yellows out side the main entrance, the traffic wardens are suppose to ignore it. As its more than likely the driver has had to go up to a ward to collect his customer. I leave a note in the windscreen saying the same....haven't had a ticket yet! Also left my car on double yellows at the JR to go collect customers.....haven't had a ticket there either....or just lucky  :-\
