Title: My New Swedish Lady
Post by: Viral_Jim on 22 May 2017, 07:22:38
So, I finally got my act together and sacked off the old girl in favour of a younger Swedish model, she's a big girl, but surprisingly light on her toes when she needs to be...

Sadly, due to SWMBO's health issues, a new, or nearly new car was off the cards, but I don't think this will be a bad substitute. It's a Euro 3 D5 (so no dpf), only 30k from new, 1 owner (plus dealer) 9 Volvo main dealer stamps plus 3 independents, so serviced about every 2700miles  :o.

I can't wait to collect, but as part of the deal I've negotiated a new timing belt and water pump, it was due 2yrs ago on age, but as is often the case not done due to low mileage. So it'll be next week when I finally get my mits on her :D

Great looking car & a very nice mileage no worries once that belt is done.

Thanks chaps!  :y

I forgot to add, my parents are in need of a second car they've finally got bored of throwing wads of cash at their P38 Range Rover  ::) so it looks like the old girl will be staying on the family  :).

Looking good.  :y

Will you be doing any DIY service work on it?

I have had the odd look at early facelift V70's 2005/6 ish vintage, which have the same Euro3 engine (no DPF) - As replacement for the 3.2.

Volvo appeared to go fully DPF/Euro 4 in around 2006/7, I've noticed that Merc E320/E280's don't have DPF until late 08/09

Yes, all of the work on it will be DIY, with the possible exception of the gearbox oil flush, I know the geartronic is a faff, so if the manual is the same then I’ll farm it out – there’s a Swedish car specialist that used to do bits on my Saabs that I’ll use if I have to. Need the Haynes book to arrive before I decide. Also I just don’t have time at the minute, and until we move, our drive has a massive slope that makes jacking & securing cars very difficult, and getting them level, impossible.

Timing belt is actually easy on these. However the car only went up for sale on Saturday and the dealer blatantly knew it would sell well. So, rather than ask for a decent chunk off, I asked for a small amount and the Timing belt/water pump. I would have needed to buy/hire a big (350NM) torque wrench and an impact driver to get the crank pulley bolt off and on again and it would have taken me a full day easily. For a proper garage, its 60-90 mins work. So a decent deal for both parties I felt.

Yes, Volvo updated its D5 engines in 2005. Euro3 like mine have black engine covers, Euro 4 have silver/grey. Euro 3 & 4 came in 185bhp and 163bhp flavours, both Euro 4 engines are identical other than the mapping. I could have gone with a euro3 185, but these have swirl flaps and some other guff that I didn’t want if I’m piling on the miles. 163bhp & 250 ft/lbs is more than adequate for motorway cruising in the UK.

Way back in time when the universe was barely formed I once owned a Volvo 340 1.7, in gold. It was utter rubbish and certainly not a car to get the girls wet between their legs.

Moving on I was very tempted by the understated S80 with a 4.4 litre V8 designed by Yamaha. Bit of a sleeper this one and 4 wheel drive if memory serves.

As for Jimmy's car, I like it. :y :y :y :y.......I would like it far better without the engine from a canal boat though. ;)

Go on then Jimmy ......wotdiditcostaya? ::)

Yes, the dear old father was thinking about one of those to terrorise the welsh and Shropshire locals with when he parted company with  the RS6 avant. Sadly they decided they needed an estate and the 4.4 never got as far as the v70 I don't think (or if it did then no one bought one!). I paid £4500 including the free timing belt. Doubtless by many on here that would be considered far too great a sum. However (as always) its about what its worth to the buyer and I'm hoping for about 150k of relatively trouble free motoring. If it gives me that, it'll be worth every penny  :y.

£4500 is a lot to pay for a 13 year old derv Volvo.

£4500 is not a lot to pay for a quality car with FSH and only 30,000 miles beneath its wheels.

Perspective. ;)

£4500 is quite steep for that...and you certainly didn't get a free cambelt. But if it's what you want, it really has nothing to do with anyone else what you paid. Only Opti is vulgar enough to ask....every time.

£4500 is quite steep for that...

Undoubtedly, and objectively I did overpay for it. However it exactly met my requirements, wants for very little and fell within budget. So subjectively I'm happy  :y.

What I have noticed of late (past 3yrs or so) is that there is very little out there in the £2-3k bracket that's been well looked after. Everything I've looked at for that kind of money has been extremely ropey and not at all well cared for. Which is fine, if you either don't mind that, or have the time and patience to get the car right. Sadly i don't fall into either camp.

I suppose what I'm saying is, it is very expensive, until you look for something comparable.

As Opti pointed out, its almost unique, and thus not necessarily expensive.

Anything under £4-5k now is bargain basement territory, with that £1.5-5k bracket being the desirable but shagged cars filled with clapped out "badges".

Trouble is, here, anything over £250 is deemed overpriced, as we are Omega lovers, and that's what we deem a good price ;D.  It was a big shock when I couldn't get a decent RWD car for £10k a year ago.

When that nice Mr Corbyn gets the keys to No.10, there will be no need for food banks!  :)

In the meantime however, park the Jag round the corner where everybody else parks and leave your iPhone in the glove compartment. It might be embarrassing pulling it out in the food bank!  ;)

Although thinking about it you'd probably just blend in with all the others with no sense of shame!  ;D

Looks well. The price paid is immaterial if you're happy that it's worth it.With 30K on the clock if you add on the 150K you mention that takes it up to 180K which if you look after it is barely run in for one of these. If anything like my V70 they're very comfy cars.

Thanks, yes they do have a reputation for "space shuttle" mileage. For me, the seats are up there with the Saab 9-5 as the most comfortable I've ever sat in. Car seats are a very personal choice though

I imagine some things will be a right fiddle, given the engine is the wrong way round compared to the mig and I have hands like shovels.  ;D That said I used to DIY SWMBO's 3.0 x-type which had a transverse v6, gearbox and 4wd gubbins packed in. Most jobs I didn't know whether I should seek assistance from a mechanic or a proctologist! :D.

Haynes book arrived and there's no faffy procedure with the gearbox oil, just drain and refill. I'll probably do most of it on the drive on ramps, then level it in the street to top up  :y
