Title: Monitor for PC use
Post by: Lincs Robert on 26 May 2017, 19:20:34
I'm going to be using my laptop quite a bit more whilst doing some work at home. Need to get a bigger screen and separate keyboard. Issue is what size should I get? Don't want stupid big.
Any comments/recommended screens? Budget is upto £175 ish - hopefully should get something pretty decent for that?

£175? I don't know much about computers but that seems like car boot money to me.

Robert, certainly in my area and probably yours too, FreeCycle usually has plenty of keyboards/monitors on offer - free, of course. Join your local group and put in a Wanted  ad.

Ron.

Thanks Ron, good idea - but I can claim the cost back - so don't mind spending a reasonable amount.

The one thing I wouild say to be aware of is the lack of adjustment on most the cheap monitors, ho height, no swivel, no tilt.
I think its worth paying to get those, as Ive seen people quite suprised when there £100, 22" Samsung has absolutely no adjustments!

Also consider what port you have on the laptop to output with, some are hdmi, some vga
I am using a 24" which feels nice and right to me....something like http://www.ebuyer.com/717667-samsung-e650pl-23-6-full-hd-monitor-ls24e65upl-en
would likely tick every box, but if you know which bits you need exactly, you could choose elsewhere

Yes, as jimbob says, check what the laptop has.  Modern stuff (both laptops and monitors) are going towards HDMI or DP only.

As for size, you need to give us a clue - at work I use a pair of 24" screens. At home I use a pair of 17".  Both sizes work well for there given uses.

The budget is more than adequate for anything up to 24" (beyond that, PC monitors start getting expensive)

The one in Jimbobs link ticks the boxes and leaves just enough over for this ....

don't know about quality/build .... but it meets the price guide  :)

View one at PC World etc before committing, as some find text a bit small at 1920x1080 resolution, even on 24".  Hence its about getting right size for your needs - if you don't need much open and on the screen together, 24" will be overkill ;)
