my stepfathers name  English: apparently an occupational name for a tipstaff or beadle who carried a long staff as a badge of office; perhaps also a nickname for a very tall, thin man, or even an obscene nickname for a man with a long sexual organ. The surname is found chiefly in northeastern England.

Mine has no meaning :o
Mine neither... family legend is that it was a spelling mistake on an orphan register, probably in the late 1700s looking at the census data. It would also appear that I am of Kentish descent... the posh part of Gravesend, ie on the river... ::), by the look of it :D

Mine's Wheeler, so it's an occupational name: an ancestor back in the middle ages made wheels.
