Title: Wee problem auto shifting
Post by: grifter on 11 June 2017, 10:40:56
Meg 2.6 noticing that when I am accelerating and the revs are getting to that point where you expect the upshift it aint doing it. Sometimes it will work but for example the other day was joining Mway speeding up, noticed it wasn't changing up, so used S button to jump it down a gear and then turn it back off I was hoping that would jolt it into changing back up to the highest gear.

It didn't, it just stuck in the lower gear. I then physically slowed down to about 50 and then it seemed to jump up the gear on the crossover between over run & putting the gas back on, then about 65mph it jumped into high gear/lock up. I also think that it may be struggling to downshift too, as for example if I hit a gradient it just grumbles up it until I hit the sport button of something. Haven't tried kickdown as would expect it should shift down. As I said doesn't happen all the time, maybe 30% of the time when I need it to change up or down as it should, it doesn't, but it will eventually do it.

Don't have any dash lights, not checked for any codes yet and will get a fluid check as soon as I can. It was doing this before I done all the timing belt work on it, and on that side of things the engine is running great so no probs there.

Common issue with 2.6 auto's in my experience.

I'd do a fluid and filter change regardless.

Ditto the above.mine is a 2.6 and when i got it i was expecting the changes to be earlier rather than the high revs it seemed to reach.i read other peoples similar stories and about software updates etc.i did a full "sumps off" fluid change followed by another fluid change to be sure and although it did seem a bit smoother the changes were still later than i would expect.i bought a s/h gearbox ecu and fitted that .it seems better now .so its either one of the following...the original ecu was faulty ? ........the original ecu was updated ? .......the new ecu is updated? ....or both ecus were ok and dissconnecting the battery has reset the "learning memory"....however if yours was ok and has just started to do this new fault then there may be an issue developing which MAY be resolved with a fluid /filter flush / change..if the fluid is old / age unknown then its worth doing anyway. Then if not have a read through some other threads on here. Been various issues with thrust washers and solenoids

The battery was disconnected for quite some time when I done the timing belt, so maybe that has done something. It does seem slightly worse as well than it did before the work I done. I will try and get a flush and fluid change and see how that goes.

As far as i know if the battery has been disconnected the ecu learning starts from scratch although ive heard from others that its contantly learning each seperate journey or cold start all i know for definate is that mine used to rev up to nearly 4000 before changing gear. I didnt do a battery off reset on my original ecu but just fitted another and it seems much better although i would still like it to be sooner.ive heard conflicting results regards the software upate .some say it revs higher with new software ,some say it revs higher with original software.all i know is mine is better with the different ecu on. That was weeks after doing the fluid which didnt seem to affect the revs but seemed a bit smoother ?   ?

So, disconnecting battery for a long period is like reinstalling an operating system, you have to download all the updates again?

No not the updates but the auto gearbox ecu has a learning function that shifts gears according to how you drive .theoretically if you drive gently it should change up sooner .it remembers you are a gentle driver and carries on similarly. Likewise if you are full throttle floorer it changes gear later. I think thats the theory behind it.so if its had its battery dissconnected it doesnt know what kind of driver its got and starts from scratch. The updates are permanently in the software and dont alter unless you have it reprogrammed .i think if there are any gearbox solenoid problems or electrical gremlins it will throw up a code. Mine once did and needed the selector switch cleaning(common fault) a good fluid change first and see what you find

That's all 'dangle berries', pulling the battery will achieve SFA.

The learning is incredibly quick on the Omega's TCM, and the default is pretty good.

Do you know what firmware is on the TCM?

No idea, how do I find out?
