Title: First issue..
Post by: Joe the fish on 13 June 2017, 13:10:45
Hi all,
I have recently aquired a 2002 2.2 Omega CDX. I have now put 1000 shakedown miles on it relatively trouble free and am about to embark on my first round of servicing etc.
However I have had an issue raise its head 5 times in those 1000 miles and would appreciate some insight from those more knowledgeable.

Occassionally (5 times so far), after stopping briefly and restarting the gearbox appears to go into a limp mode or select a higher gear. Basically lacks guts pulling away and feels like the parking brake is left on or its in top gear, once you build up speed its pretty normal but getting there is slow. A couple of restarts often rectify it, reverse gear seems unnaffected. No noises, light or anything untoward although I am yet to put it on the code reader to see if anything is showing.
Only other thing of note is that when this happens the idle revs seem to drop slightly sitting closer to 450 than a bit over 500 as they normally do, and possibly the teperature sensor is slightly higher (90+ a touch rather than 89/90), I only noticed the temperature today after a brief stop and restart at the petrol station, although the weather is hot and all returned to normal when driving so could have been heat soak or similar?

So my current thoughts are gearbox service, which I had planned anyway along with full engine and cambelt service, but there is a niggle in my mind saying cam shaft sensor. I have no idea why I am thinking that and can only assume its something i have read here then forgotten!

Any further thoughts on things to do or try? I'll do the codes tonight if I can find the code reader.

Now I think about it after seeing the temp guarge today I have rarely, if ever, heard a fan going after stopping the car which given some of my journeys seems a little odd. Should this happen, and if so in what circumstances and how best to test it? I think its possible that something may have been disturbed as it had a new rad the week I collected it due to a snapped hose mounting.

All thoughts and pointers appreciated.

While I have got you, where is the best place to purchase the service kit, cambelt etc.

Thanks
Joe

Cam sensors can be troublesome on the 2.2 and do result in the automatic gearbox playing up some times. The tell tale for this is if it needs a few seconds cranking before the engine starts rather than starting immediately.

The other likely cause is that water has got into the gearbox selector switch. See if the LED lights by the gear selector accurately follow the stick position. If they flicker or all come on, all go out, etc. then this might be the issue.

Getting the codes read will tell you more, of course, and an auto gearbox fluid change is good practice if the car is new to you. :y

Cheers for that.
Lights on the gearbox are fine, and when its not doing the above (most of the time) selection works fine through all gears and settings. Not actually tried selecting and driving in anything other than D or R when the problem appears. If it comes again I will check that.
I might just do the camshaft sensor anyway while I am in there doing the cambelt and service, especially if they are a known issue unless they can be checked to be functioning correctly or repaired?

When you have the codes read, there will be no mention of the cam sensor code... This is normally a sure sign of a failed cam sensor on the 2.2. Only replace it with a genuine Vx one purchased from a genuine Vx dealer that you genuinely have to walk into. ;)

Cheers for that,
My issue is I think my nearest stealer is a 50mile round drive I would rather not do if I dont have to, are there any reliable online sources or even members that offer the service (a no doubt better one than most main stealers!)

In fact I dont know vauxhalls at all from a parts perspective so have no idea who to go to and who to avoid, I might start a thread for a list of some of the better sources as I havent seen one yet.

Thanks
Joe

Everything on your list can be purchased on line... The only exception is sensors. The Omega is sensitive to them and fussy.

Cambelt kit and water pump from Buypartsbuy. Service items from eBay... Genuine is cheap enough... Oil, filters (Oil/air/pollen) and plugs should cost no more than £60 even from a dealer, just haggle and ask for the best price... Oil is normally on offer at dealers if you ask usually 20 litres for the price of £15, or a variation on a theme ;)

I realise this WILL upset DG, and a few others on here, however when my crank sensor showed signs of giving up (another part that needs to be Genuine GM), I bought it online from here: http://www.autovaux.co.uk/ (http://www.autovaux.co.uk/). Although I didn't walk in, the part did look genuine, and came sealed in a genuine-looking GM bag, complete with hologram. Since fitting, the car has done getting on 15,000 miles, so I can only assume I bought a genuine one (or I was lucky).

I will say two things...

1. Never sell a car to family...
2. Not my car...

Just to say.. I mentioned in your other thread that I could get a Tech 2 to Bridport for key programming. This would also read the codes from engine and gearbox, of course, and hopefully allow us to get to the bottom of this issue too. :y

I am actually very relaxed about this. Their last car was a P38 Ramge Rover - the bar for reliability has not been set very high  :P

Joe, in your original post you mentioned lack of fan noise. I,ve had mine (2.2) for three years and have never heard the fans kick in and have never had temp problems. Perhaps i,m just deaf. ;D

Cheers all,
Well I was being paranoid about the fan, your right just not noisy!
I have no codes showing but do now have the code reader in the car so I can read it during the fault if and when it happens again. Although I am fairly sure now its the cam shaft sensor.
Full on shopping for parts for my service etc now, and believe I have managed to find a genuine sensor for £20 so that will get done at the same time.

I believe from my research the genuine sensors were made by Siemens... using the Siemens part number rather than the GM/Vauxhall one found me many more options at some friendlier prices!

Will let you all know how it goes after the service.
