Hi all,
I'm breaking my 2.5TD (not a sale post!) but my question is how difficult is it to remove the engine and box?
In my head I'm thinking, gearbox mounts, prop, subframe and then strut tops then it should, in theory lower down onto the ground?

Yup, lower onto a stack of two or three Euro pallets, blocks on the top one if needed for subframe bolt access, undo the subframes and lift the body up...
Two post lift was practically designed for the job. If on the ground simply un bolt the front bumper and chop out the lower crossmember... then drag the shell off :y
Either way rad/oil cooler/condenser need removing along with selector linkage ;)

On a lift will obviously be easier... as you can strip the underside then drop it straight onto a trailer/transit/skip. ;)

Just thinking outside the box as I'll be doing this on my own with the car on the ground and only an engine hoist to aid me. Instead of undoing the subframe if I undo the Engine mounts on either side of the engine and cut the front panel away from the car will the engine pull out the front?

On to ramps, pallet and blocks under subframe keeping bolts accessible. Jack she'll up enough to remove wheels then lower onto pallet. Unbolt subframe and gearbox mount and exhaust rubbers... Axle stands under rear chassis. Once front unbolting is done, jack front end up and chop through the lower crossmember. Pallet truck the engine/box/exhaust forward and away. Same for rear subframe :y

Does it matter about the front/radpack area?
If not its reasonably do-able on your own with an engine hoist with the gearbox and engine connected (may moons ago did an engine swap in a 2.0 auto to V6) with the strap round the engine just behind the engine mounts, you just have to pull forwards/hoist/hold gearbox down and it'll come out - space is an issue so remove the bonnet as the engine hoist will be where the bonnet opens to.

Straight 6 and box is nearly 6' long... Doable but far easier to pull the shell back from it on the level... ;)
